Hi Bob,

I don't think we'll see any new firmware for the 568.2mm.

My understanding is that it doesn't have the internal resources (which are available in the 861v4) to handle the apodising upsampling.

Wouldn't really expect a free upgrade to apodising for my old 568.2 BUT

What about a fix for Trifield width? Trifield being Meridian's USP and all that.

Be grateful if dealers could be asking M on our behalf.

Main system; 861v8 ID41, DSP8000SEU fronts with DSP5500 centre and DSP7000 rears (all in lovely silver) 504, HD621

Sometimes it seems like what happens here has no influence on Meridian, which is a shame, as many of us do a lot to promote Meridian elsewhere. However it does seem that the apodising hack may have resulted in the wrong sort of influence. It seems to me that this is a very good example of the consequences of poor communication. If we had known that the apodising update was, in fact, just round the corner, who would ever have bothered developing or installing it?

And another thing....I'm having a grumpy day today due to a bad back, so I'm going to keep going. Why is it Meridian's problem if someone bricks their machine due to unofficial software? That's the users problem, and they accept the risks when they use it. If the mechine is in warranty, it will be void. If it's out if warranty, they have to pay for a repair anyway. Most companies love repair business - mine does - it's very profitable. By all means communicate the risks, but don't treat intelligent and enthusiastic owners like outlaws. Spell out the risks - suggest that we wait a few more weeks - offer people beta software - engage with community etc. Meridian owners are often the same people that engage so successfully with Oppo and Lumagen, and we know how well that works.

I agree any more than it's Meridian's problem if a user damages their product attempting to return it to a dealer for a software update.

I think that's the issue. I don't think 'old' Meridian did make a profit on servicing. They spent a long time talking to end users and did many free repairs. Although you could argue this was built into the purchase price...

Obviously as money became tight they had to look for ways to cut costs and service is easy to cut - especially if you decide to push everyone to dealers.

For me the 'upgradability' and service was an important factor in Meridian purchasing and at the moment I'm afraid I'm disappointed with the current situation.

Personally I think the other reason floated just provided a convenient smoke screen to justify a change.

That's exactly what happened. It also never would have been hacked in the first place if Meridian had communicated better and kept to a reasonable schedule of what they promised.

Granted that it was delayed further from the hack to make it more hack proof.

I sure would love to have the software and be able to do the upgrade myself. As others have said, it's about having control over my system.

I don't oppose to dealers charging for a home visit, but if you bring items to the store for the upgrade, it should be free.

For anyone who has had his G68 upgraded, do you have to re-adjust any settings after the update?

John

Trifield isn't broken on production 568 firmware though is it?

I agree it doesn't work on the Beta version, but that's beta firmware for you, it's a test non-production version.
I think that's fair enough.

In store isn't really practical if having to take several large DSP speakers and/or disconnecting a processors that may be mounted in a rack etc. It's pain, inconvenience, time and risks damaging the products in transit, during disconnection- reconnection etc.

Also apart from software bug fixes it doesn't provide an opportunity to properly assess if a "preference" mod such as linear versus minimum phase filter or 3dB tweak versus M's change etc means keeping to re-installing previous firmware.

Ideally the customer should have the choice of DIY or using a dealer if preferred.

Avi

Hi Avi

I agree with you. I was really wondering out aloud why the dealers weren't lapping up this opportunity with this board.

Cheers
Tom
