When apodising was originally debated, VK speculated that Meridian had "deliberately crippled" some of the applications so that the reference kit would sound best and justify a premium (which actually seems fair commercial behaviour).

We also learned, or so we thought, that the optimum application required the most processing power. This made it all the more surprising when extra MIPS were not added to the 808.3 or the 861v6 (or even BIPS).

And then Meridian offered free appodising to "old" 5k2s but not 8ks.

What is going on here?

Conversation with Bob and New Management:

New Management: What do mean you updated the 5200's for free?
Bob: We released new firmware to our loyal customers to improve the 5200's.
New Management: Did we make money?
Bob: No, but we'll retain loyal customers for the future sales and reputation of upgradable products.
New Management: Don't do that again.
Bob: Sure, what do I tell customers when they ask about 8K's and 861 and other products I said would get upgraded?
New Management: Tell them it's "in the works". They will eventually stop asking. How's that car radio coming?
