I am just working through Chris Rea's 11 CD/1 DVD Book Set (Blue Guitars)
I have enjoyed it immensly so far. Disc 7 "Blues Ballads" is amazing if you want some smooth chillout music.
I have been loaned the set, and the size of it made me groan at the thought of going through it, but I have been really Impressed.
He takes you on a journey through the History of the Blues from its original roots but with all Original music. Vinyl lovers will love the authentic backround crackle on the early CD's, as you are hearing it in the way it would have been heard on record by those lucky enough to have such access.
The book of comprehensive sleeve notes and original artwork is a joy as well, you wont get all of this on Sooloos however hard you try! You will want to keep that handy for constant referal.

I will have to buy this; Cheers Chris smile

After several mentions of HDTracks.com in other threads I had a good browse through last night and ended up buying McCartney/Band on the Run set.
It's offered in 96/24 FLAC / double CD either compressed or uncompressed. I went with the latter.
If you register on the site they send you a promo voucher code for 20% off first order. This put the double CD at $15 which I think is pretty good value.

As for the sound....top notch. If yo don't have it in another format it's worth a punt.

cheers

Thanks Nick
Do you have the CD version to compare to???

I assume the Download is a Noticeable Upgrade over the 16/44 version???

I'm interested in a quite a few things on the HDTracks website, but like you, wanted to make sure that it was REAL 24/96 rather than just Upsampled 16/44, hence my question

Also no problem with non-US Credit Card or Address etc???

Cheers
Ronnie

Hi Ronnie,

I don't have the CD to compare to ...sorry.

However, the sleeve notes (included as a .pdf file) has this

Quote
The audio industry has seen many technical innovations since Band on the Run was first released on vinyl in 1973, the most notable being digital recording. However, with the introduction of CD came two advances, de-noising and peak limiting which have become increasingly unpopular within certain areas of the music industry and amongst audiophiles.
De-noising was introduced to remove the inherent sound, or hiss, associated with analogue tape. The amount of processing used to remove tape noise can be varied, but when used excessively, many believe that it also has a detrimental effect on elements of the musical
sound.
Peak limiting is a process that increases the loudness of music. It is achieved by holding the loudest peaks down and raising the overall level of the music. Much depends on the amount of limiting applied, but at its most extreme the result can be a serious reduction in the dynamic range and often audible distortion.
The release of The Beatles remasters in 2009 saw a marked change in attitudes towards these issues, where both noise reduction and limiting were used sparingly with the aim of representing the master tapes more accurately.
Such is the case with the newly remastered CD of Band on the Run: tape noise reduction has scarcely been used and the degree of limiting
is subtle. In addition digital technology has advanced with the ability now to offer recordings in 24 bit/96kHz. The high resolution version is being made available via download and is being offered in two formats: limited, which is comparable in volume to the remastered
CD, and un-limited, which in comparison with the limited version
will sound quieter, but retain the dynamic range of the original master recording.

As for payment, I used paypal as I was too lazy to go and find wy wallet to get a card out wink. I doubt there will be any country issues with cards as it all looked quite straight fwd.

the hi-res demo album they offer (free) is good too.

cheers

Many thanks for posting that Nick.......the level of Detail involved in the PDF gives the strong impression that at least they are aware of the typical CD Compromises and are doing something to counteract them........rather than just cynically re-issuing the 16/44 Masters Upsampled to 24/96

HDTracks seem to have increased their Catalog recently.........it's a good option for High Res stuff now

Hopefully, as more people buy stuff, they will add more Artists & Albums etc.

Cheers
Ronnie

Chris Rea's 11 CD/1 DVD Book Set (Blue Guitars).
I Posted about this earlier and now I have heard all 11 CD's.

It just gets better as you go through it. I urge you to have a long listen as it takes a journey from Blues origins to the Music we know love and recognise today. The 60's/70's disc is sensational (and its not the only one) IMHO. You can recognise influences from some real classic sounds but the Music is all original.

I am eager to watch the DVD part of the set next.

Give your ears a treat. Chris smile

I'm sorry Chris...........but it has to be said...........

Chris Rea for BLUES??????????????

That's akin to Boy's Own for Opera...............or Madonna for Classical.................or JedWard for Jazz...........

Start with Robert Johnson............work (enjoy) thru Muddy Waters / Howling Wolf / Little Walter / Sonny Boy Williamson...............take a few diversions along the way to Buddy Guy / Jimmy Rushing / B.B. King / Big Joe Turner............and many, many others.................but Chris Rea????

Even the thought of it has my brain doing somersaults...................sorry, but it had to be said.......

Ronnie, you need to hear it. After serious illness he decided to play what he wanted and not what record companies dictate for commercial success.

Its a Paradigm shift, You will love it, you have to be open minded, its a great achievment IMHO

I love Blues, so I know where your comming from. Chris smile

+1 for Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scott's Blu-Ray. Wonderful sound and video quality, excellent musicianship and so tight. Fun and interesting interview with Jeff Beck too. The extra rockabilly concert is not really my cup of tea. This is one of the best value purchases I've made in a long time ($15.99 from Amazon.com).

I've enjoyed the David Gilmour concert at The Royal Albert Hall a lot too.

I picked up Dire Straits' Alchemy Live recently too. I've always enjoyed this concert, but my memory of the LP and VHS soundtracks was that both were much better than CD, which sounds unpleasantly 'hot' in comparison. This is better on the Blu-Ray, but still not as good as my memory of the LP/VHS. Quite frustrating, as the sound quality is generally quite good on Knopfler's work. The interviews are a great blast from the past. This was a lot cheaper to buy from Amazon.co.uk and have shipped to the US than from Amazon.com.

Porcupine Tree have been getting a lot of play time of late. I don't think there's anything they have done that I don't like more the more I listen to it. I really wish it was easier to see them live over here - something else for the Bucket List.

Cheers, Ian

I have been asked to put a link in here to my mixes, I never normally recommend my own music as it is an acquired taste, very acquired my wife would say! wink

At home I listen to everything from Bowie to Einaudi, Japan to Rutter and last night it was 80's unknowns The Big Supreme follwed by Joni Mitchel's Both Sides Now,

However, my real love is dance music.
Although the music I detest more than anything else is commercial euro dance music too!

I like my dance music to build like a good classical piece and have some musicality too, now that can be the individual tune or the way I blend them together.

Here is a page to some of my mixes, and try and keep them at an hour long mostly and they do need listening to from start to finish.

Escape, could be a good one to start with, it is more chilled than most, and a lot of people liked Vodoo.

It will certainly give your woofers are work out anyway! wink

No Darling, I've had it months!
