I realize you did a ton of comparisons and it's by no means questioning or not appreciating the time you spent sharing.

But having ID40 with HS=N is not the same.

As you correctly did I think you are comparing what apodizing is adding. But to help confirm that just a bit further if you set HS=N and still heard a difference then it might suggest it's not the apodizing (or just the apodizing), but something else. With ID40 in there it's a completely different system (IMHO).

By the way you can post links to specific posts, it's the Icon in the upper left of each post. Blue Square around a Post-It, just click it and copy and paste from browser address or right click and choose copy shortcut (depending on browser).

Sorry George,

I have brain ache with a head cold, I took your question as referring to sources (as that is what I was testing) not changing the output of the 861v6.

If I get some time I might have a go at this, but this would not be for a few weeks now.

I too agree that using the ID40 makes it a different system.

Regards,
Carl

No problem, just to be clear it would be nice if you did the same "source" test you last did but locking 861v6 down to HS=N and see if you still detect any difference. If you don't hear a difference then I think you can assume it's apodizing making the difference that you are hearing with HS=Y. Not a guaranteed conclusion but just another data point. Since the 800 and C15 are very different pieces of hardware it's hard to conclude the difference being attributed to just apodizing.

just to be clear on one thing.......

ALL Data Files Are Upsampled (include Apodizing) and Resolution Enhanced within the 861v6, essentially as soon as they are Input into the 861

Setting the HS=Yes or No has no effect on the above behaviour

Setting HS=No will cause the already Apodized stream to be Donwsampled to e.g 24/44

Perhaps the Diagram below makes my point better......I cannot find a similar diagram for the 861v6, so I'll have to use a 568 Diagram.......the internal architecture & philosophy will be similar

The ONLY thing that HS=No affects is on the very right hand side of the Diagram, i.e. the Digital Outputs

Therefore, when using an 861v6, ALL Streams will have been Apodized and RE'd up to 24/88 internally.........selecting HS=No will simply Downsample the material to 24/44

The question then becomes: "Will the Positive effects of applying the Apodizing filter to the Recording be reversed by the Downsampling process at the digital outs???".......... Personally, I think the answer is No

Therefore, drawing any conclusions about Apodizing by simply Flicking the HS Switch is a dangerous one IMHO..........the Data Stream will have been Apodized and RE'd anyway.........you would only be comparing a 24/44 version of a data stream that had been derived from an identically processed 24/88 one
