Hi,

In the "Meridian 2006" there was a topic regarding the powersupply upgrades that was possible to do on a G68.

These where avaliable through Mauimods.com, and therefore I have tried to contact them, with no luck what so ever.

Does anyone know of other companies offering similar "plug an play" upgrades - or perhaps a way to get in touch with mauimods.

I have an "upgraded" PSU sitting on a shelf which I bought from another HH:er. Neither of us have tried it yet though.

I would be highly skeptical of Maui Mods. (I have had to sue them to get a piece of prepaid gear returned.)

Kyle of Reference Audio Mods recently did some work for me that was incredibly high quality "non-BS" oriented. Much of what he did for me was improving the power supply of the unit in question. I'd suggest giving him a call. (I know others on this Forum are skeptical of mod services in general, but I was very happy with the consultative solution development and the implementation.)

Since my first post I have succeded in contacting Mauimods - when I try the unit I will post results.

Oddly enough, whilst I agree with your sentiment Roger, a replacement PSU in an original Thomson box is almost a necessity. The supplied PSU is awful and the caps degrade over time (you can see them bulging and leaking). This leads, not to a black-and-white failure, but a whole range of problems (e.g. blocking, failing to lock on to a channel) which get worse over time. I replaced all the caps in my failing PSU and, voila, the box was as good as new (which isn't saying a great deal, I'll admit).

And for anyone here who does not know about them:

I could not urge you more strongly to not engage Mauimods.

I had to sue them to get a unit returned. I sent a DEQX for upgrading, received emails suggesting it would take a few days, and over a year later I have still not received my unit back. Along the way I received multiple emails suggesting it would only take another day or two. All that after paying in full in advance.

Aberdeen Components is the same outfit.

My experience is mirrored in a horrendous Better Business Bureau rating.

Take your business to someone reputable.

But the SD image is terrible, seriously soft!!

The Thompson box is pretty soft on SD, but much better with better caps fitted, and the EPG is also much faster, can't work out why that is but I have two and the one with the upgraded PSU is a far better machine.
However the Pace HD box is the best of them all, quick epg, and a pretty good SD picture, quite a bit sharper than the Thompson and a hell of a lot better than the new smaller HD box.
However you do need to fit a bigger HD yourself as they only ever came with the standard poxy 300gig one fitted.

Started with all Thomson but due to the Thomson PSU issues, this has over time become Two by 1.5Tb Boxes; 1 by Pace (with larger HD); 1 by Samsung and 1 by original Thomson

When feeding Kuro's, let's just say that my experiences haven't been the the same as yours. The new boxes appear more stable with less crashes and the EPG is at least as fast as the Pace

Besides, With all of the BBC HD, Sky Movies HD and Sky Sports HD channels these days, there's even less reasons to watch any SD stuff, IMHO

I sold my Kuro 500M as I just found the SD to soft with it using these HD boxes.

Have you done a side by side with the Pace vs Thompson? I found the Pace so much sharper, putting it up on a JVC on a 10ft screen really showed the differences.
So much so I wish I had got the Samsung before selling the Kuro.

I agree with you regarding watching SD, it is getting better all the time, however, when I got the Pioneer 18 months ago I was still watching HD and I also had a Panasonic PHD8 and PF11 in different rooms so it was easy to see differences.
I had the 500M running alongside the PF11 for 2 days and the difference was not subtle when it came to sharpness, so I got out while people were still paying top dollar for them.
