Can someone explain the issue with Trifield width ?
Thanks in advance.
Avii IIRC changing the width setting does nothing Cliff

And to re-cap, I think the following sums up the current status. Please would anyone correct me if they know otherwise.
Trifield width ok 561 565 568 (v1 firmware) 568.2 (v2 firmware)
Status unknown G61SL G68SL 861v1 (probably ok) 861v2 (probably ok) 861v3 (v3 firmware) (probably ok) 861v3 (v3.5 firmware) (probably broken) 861v6 (one report it works and one that it doesn't - see below posts)
Trifield width definitely broken 568.2 (v2.5 firmware) G61 G61R G68 (all variants except G68SL) 861v4

I missed hearing that Trifield is fixed in the 8661V6. Has a HH confirmed it works.

JerryL confirmed Trifield width works in 861v6. Post here. Edit: G68SL still unconfirmed either way. See this post.

Another issue with G68 that doesn't seem to get much discussion is the 2nd zone doesn't work for a different source say SPDIF if the first zone is using an HDMI input through the HD621. As I understand it, there is no fix for this but I do think it's a real shortcoming of the HD621 solution and makes the choice between a G61 and G68 more marginal -- most significant remaining G68 advantage balanced outputs.

I have just received my V6 upgrade after being on order for 2 months and Trifield width does not work for me. The display is clearly showing the width going from 0 to 1.5 but there is no effect on the sound

Are there different firmwares involved here?
I am of the generation that has never heard Trifield width working...

Looks like v6 is back in the "unknown" category.

Bearing in mind the number of unpublicized firmwares for the HD621, I wonder whether there are similarly several early firmwares for the 861v6?

It's possible Nic, but the v6 was shipped *months* after Meridian acknowledged that Trifield width was broken.

my guess is it is user differences in understanding what it should do or config differnces like analog vs DSP. If it was firmware I'd expect a later unit to not revert back to broken.

I got answer from Meridian through my UK dealer: The Trifield width bug fix is in development however, testing new versions of software across our entire range of current Surround Controllers as well as those back to 568.2 and even earlier 861`s is a big project not only in testing that the fix works, but also making sure that nothing else has been broken in the implementation of the code. This must be incorporated around other tasks - we have many important projects, the Trifield width fix being one of them.
Regarding the Apodising firmware, Meridian is still committed to releasing these for the relevant products but at the moment we are unable to comment on a release date. Bob has promised it and we want to be able to boast the fact that we are able to offer customers a performance upgrade without the need for a hardware change just as we did for DSP5200. There is no reason to believe that this will not happen, but as mentioned previously the development team are very busy with ongoing projects and as much as we try to make them, they cannot do everything at once.
Interestingly, there have been remarkably few comments from dealers. Perhaps this is either because the fix is not important for some customers (yes, the width is broken, but Trifield is still usable and enjoyable - you just can`t adjust it) but we also realise that for others it is very important. Or, dealers may have dealt with customers` concerns with reassurance, perhaps something along the lines of “Bob has promised it so do not worry, it will come”.
Please be assured, we have not forgotten either issue and Bob is passionate about supporting everyone! Instead of spinning many plates and spinning none very well, sometimes it makes much more sense (and one gets much more done!) to concentrate on spinning fewer but with a better result.
I hope this makes the waters a little less muddy and we look forward to a time when these are no longer issues and everyone can enjoy 1.5! ;-) Not really any new info and still no date (which I specifically asked for). At least the promises are again confirmed.
