We have been promised a software update for ages. Will it ever happen?

There are two issues here:

1) Broken Trifield width setting identified by this forum and acknowledged by Meridian in November 2009. This fix is long overdue.

2) Apodizing update for the G6x (and 861v4) - From Meridian's perspective, a purely elective update that Meridian is within its rights to deliver as and when it wishes.

Clearly (2) may lose Meridian new processor sales (though it may not). However, Meridian should also consider that not delivering such updates will lead to - in my opinion - justified accusations of breaking promises made to a public forum and breaking a software upgrade path that, historically, has been implicit in its pricing structure and rhetoric.

There are plenty of Hitchhikers who buy Meridian new that Meridian should not want to lose. Those Hitchhikers supporting the used-market - Meridian "owners" - play a crucial role allowing others to cash in their old models and upgrade to new Meridian products.

May I suggest that everyone who is concerned with these two issues ask their dealers to press Meridian for answers. Also, if the absence of these software updates is preventing you committing to further Meridian purchases (e.g. more DSPs, Sooloos), I suggest that you make that known to your dealers too.

I have recently asked Meridian direct about this (through the contact form on their website) and through a UK dealer and in both instances got no reply thusfar. I recommend you do the same to put some oil to the fire ...

VK,

points well made. To add, if the current -1 generation of processors were given 1) and 2) I see it only as helping the upgrade path for many customers. The resale value of the -1 generation is thus enhanced and supported and faith is also restored which leads to a level of confidence that helps folks find 10k-20k for an upgrade.

Whilst products remain unfixed for so long, it really does make one wonder a) why that is and b) in fact should one be concerned that a 10k new processor will remain unfixed for so long should an issue be found in it's performance.

Lack of info to customers and dealers alike doesn't help resolve this.

We have a vested interest in M's continued success. I trust they (M) will recognise this, take on board some of these points and respond appropriately.

Notwithstanding the sound arguments portrayed above for legacy processors I do feel a little short changed with my recent purchase of a new G61SL as it too has not had Trifield width fixed. If Meridian can fix it for the 861v6 why has it not been possible (OR IS IT!) for the fix to be incorporated into the latest generation of speakerlink processors? The significant upgrades within the speakerlink versions are therefore somewhat dulled by the failure to address a problem that has existed for years! I am sure that there must be several individuals reading this forum who are weighing up the pro's and cons of upgrading to the newer processors (861 apart) perhaps feeling that the disadvantages (AC12's/cabling etc.) to use older speakers are not compensated enough given the known shortcomings within the new products. I can't believe that it is not in M's best interest to resolve this, just imagine how much less adverse comments reading they would not have to endure in the future!!

Just so. I was considering G61 or G68 plus a 5200HC or 7200HCto get Trifield and MRC (difficult listening room), but with width broken (which I learned on this forum), I decided to go for the direct (and some might say the superior)solution and not to buy the processors and the extra DSP. I might reconsider in the future if M fix width, and I'll make sure my dealer knows this.

Re VK's #2.

Since my Sonos, I have not spun a CD disc and won't for the reasons on many other threads. I have resigned myself to what I hope is a temporary situation that the quality of my server is not up to what I used to get with spinning on my G91, but that is the compromise that I have decided to make. I gather that I am far from the only one who has made this choice.

I would be happy to pay M to upgrade my server system to get my original quality or better. Be that an upgrade to my G68 or a magic box between my Sonos and G68 or a modified input to my HD621. I would be willing to pay even more if that upgrade or magic box or HD621 mod brought me further than my former G91 and approached the sound of spinning on the 808.3

Surely there are many others in my camp and M could get a burst of revenue flow if they made their existing technology available to us.

I now understand why Meridian didn't put SPDIF input on HD621 because it doesn't really do all that much for Audio. But there are plenty of ways to get Audio into your HD621 (I a have a neat little box available in restaurant that requires no Video sink and allows ToslInk into your HD621).

The only way to really improve 16bit is to have have the upgrade in the G68. And that would assume that upgrade is as good as what's in current processors.

Hi George,

Are you saying that with your box in the restaurant I can plug my Sonos through it into my G68 and have the benefit of the apodising filter in the HD621 without all the complications that others have elaborated on in this forum? If so, I am interested. Will you ship to Canada? If you prefer, answer on the restaurant thread or pm me.

Why do you say that the HD621 doesn't do all that much for audio? My understanding is that a lot of people on this forum have jumped through all kinds of hoops to run their servers through the HD621 because they noticed a big improvement.

"The only way to really improve 16bit is to have have the upgrade in the G68. And that would assume that upgrade is as good as what's in current processors."
I assume that you mean the 861 V6 as to my understanding the G series has not yet benefited from the apodising or special sauce that was added to the V6. Just for academic interest, why couldn't the improvement be made in a separate box the same as the HD621 does for Bluray.

Aloha,

Startech info Answered in Restaurant.

Regarding HD621 and audio. My opinion differs from the masses (at least with my setup and my ears).

Yes, yet another box designed specifically for the improvements that are inside say the 808.3 could be another product. But in my experience the HD621 is not such a device. And I don't believe it's due the cost of adding a box like the StarTech and going over HDMI is the limitation. Note: I have no first hand experience with what a 861V6 or 808.3 can do with 16bit CD's. So how valuable such a box to myself (or to advise others) is totally unknown to me.

Keep in mind it's a conflict of interest in my wanting to sell the StarTech box and telling you my honest feeling of what to expect by running Audio through HD621.

It's also a conflict of interest that if the HD621 improvement heard by the masses is from the "power of suggestion" perhaps the +3dB tweak is too frown

I think I'm the only one that says Yes to +3dB and no to HD621 (for Audio Sources). HD621 is a solid unit for doing what it was designed to LEGALLY do.

My own worry of the Apodizing update for G68 has diminished since experimenting with HD621. I want the Trifield Width 10x more than apodizing. And I think it's a down right sin it's still broken. And to be honest I would advise anyone considering a new G68SL or G61RSL to have the dealer put it in writing on the receipt it be fixed within some time period or you get your money back. I certainly would. Dealers need to put some pressure on Meridian to get this fixed. And I think Dealers are as much to blame. They should be aware of it and putting pressure on Meridian.

Do you think a dealer could sell a Car if you got 5 Speed instead of a 6 Speed. It's really that fundamental.

Hi George,

Yes I realized that was a conflict of interest for you but I rely on your forum track record that your technical opinion would overcome your marketing need.

Thanks for your help and you got mail.
