I can't believe the silence from Meridian on this. Surely this forum deserves a commet from them by now.

To give a little sympathy to the situation of any manufacturer- its very difficult and tricky to deal directly with individual customers. I have learned not to judge too quickly- perhaps Meridian is reviewing this right now- perhaps not. I have no idea. Im just thinking it would be easy enough for them to implement this in the software. I wonder what the reason why they did not- perhaps its a bean counter approach to make sure things dont get damaged? I have no idea.

I watched Avatar BD today and had to tweak the LFE down. It was very hot at times.
Not sure about the summing logic (as per comments above) etc but I have no sub so it goes straight to the 8k's.
Would be necessary to test this properly I suggest.

I watched Avatar BD the other day too and it sounded fantastic (I also run no sub). I think it was one of the scenes at the sacred tree where the transfer failed. Bass was really pounding but held together quite nicely. One of these days I have to rerun MRC and see how it effects SNR and Level. Worst thing that could happen is you clip 3dB (or should I say clip 3dB more). Which is not going to make it "Hot". I also plan to record that part of the movie just to take a look at the levels. It felt like ALL channels were getting a lot of (good) bass. I believe if you have no sub Meridian routes the bass only to Large Fronts. I believe the only way you can get true LFE levels is to have an LFE sub. I need to talk to my wife about that The LFE Scale goes ABOVE 0dB (and not by 3dB) but much more than that. So Meridian already (+3dB or no +3dB) has to play some games with the bass if you have no LFE sub. With Analog you can cheat easier.

The explosions under the Home Tree were quite spectacular. I saw the movie at the Imax in Bangkok and the sound at home is so much better

I found the explosions good but nothing all that new. It was the drum beat at Tree of Souls when they attempted to transfer Sigourney Weaver to the avatar that stood out for me in the bass department.

Yes, special effects and sound were very impressive on the BD but I thought that the film overall was about 20 minutes too long.

I know were getting OT here, to bring it back I will say that I checked for the clipping lights on my speakers and I didnt see any during Avatar. What stands out about the CGI environments is I bought into them- usually I find CGI to be a little fake/ plastic.

I ran a bunch of tests and I could not get clipping lights to come on even with a known seriously clipped signal. So don't depend on them. I'm not sure what situations they actually kick in.
I tried to record Avatar to see what the channels looked like but I had troubles recording it. I was using my EMU box I will try the TASCAM box next time. I have successfully recorded 24/88 with the Tascam off the Clux.

Ok, I finally managed to record Avatar digitally with the TASCAM 144.
Front's have 3.2dB of headroom Center has 2.7dB of headroom LFE has 4.8dB of headroom Rears have 11.2 dB of headroom
This was ONLY ONE chapter of ONE movie.
This was Chapter 27 but a fairly intense scene.
There would be ZERO clipping here even if I went higher than +3dB.
