Robert With the Sonos solution, you still need the Zoneplayer(s) Clients to be on in order to access the Music Files on the NAS. The Sonos remote on its own offers nothing. It "reads" the NAS based files thru the Zoneplayer client. Turn the Zoneplayer off and the Sonos Remote (or the Sonos App on an iTouch) cannot read the NAS files any longer
In a similar way, you need a Mac Client to be on in order for the Remote App to access the Files on the NAS.
I'm not sure there is a big difference. The Power Saving options on a Mac Mini are pretty good and the installation of an SSD takes a step further

I installed Remote on the iPod touch Santa just brought me, and it's very impressive. Similar to iPeng for the Squeeebox, but way faster in operation (pretty much instant) and it picked up all the artwork from iTunes, unlike iPeng.
Although I've always been lukewarm about served music, I've been looking at Sooloos in more detail with all the recent announcements. The Control:10 screen is just too ugly a lump to want it anywhere in my room, and the iPad looks the perfect device in this type of set up. With Ronnie's comments about Mac Mini + iPad, I am seriously considering such a set up. Elegant, visually delightful, and easy to use, and like VK's other half, Mrs Meridian is seriously impressed. Alas, I suspect M has some viable competition to Sooloos, and at a fraction of the price too...
Cheers
George
PS Ronnie, what's an SSD?

I can see the iPad being the control interface for a whole host of music streaming platforms.
For more general applications I wonder if the 1 Gig processor is going to be enough?
Cliff
PS George - SSD = solid state drive (= very low power usage)
Main system - Sources (Kodi-HTPC, Vero 4k, FireTV, Sat) into Trinnov Altitude 32 (8-16) (+Roon), Trinnov Amplitude 8 amp & Vivid Audio (Giya G3, V1.5) and REL Stentor III speakers. Others: F80 + Raspberry Pi and other Pi systems.

For instance, I'm in the process of setting up IR Blaster to control my F80 - I doubt the Apple solution has that kind of flexibility. Have a look at the site below and there are many others available thru the App Store Mastercontrol iPhone App

That looks very good, but I don't think it offers what I'd want to do. Using *only* the iPeng app, the IR Blaster plug-in will turn on my F80 (with optical input selected) when the Squeezebox is turned on, turn if off when the SB is turned off, and there are dedicated volume buttons within iPeng which will control the F80 volume. However, master contol might be the perfect thing for controlling my TV and Sky box in the living room on the same iPad...

Really great information - in particular, many thanks to you Ronnie.
I think I'm sold. I have been tempted to go with Sooloos but the 'Apple solution' with iPad is just sooo appealing. Also, superficially I lose nothing in terms of sound quality vs. a Sooloos implementation. Apodising in the new 861 or via the HD621 with the Kanex HDMI gizmo Ronnie highlighted, is eminently possible.
Question is how can M respond to this in form, function and price?
Also, I'm thinking of junking my 10 year old Crestron touch panels in favour of iPad. Not only can I use iPad+ for a new music server-based system, I have a delightful, sexy, light, slim panel for all my home automation (inc. home theatre) applications. This alone will save thousands in terms of upgrading my Crestron panels and bring everything I need onto a single 21st century panel. Brilliant!!

Just throwing out the Options
No doubt the IPen App is good and when they use the extra real estate on the iPad (an EXTRA 544 by 448 pixels per screen) then a Sooloos type Interface becomes possible
It's definitely a "Rising Tide" type of Product

I want to see the new Remote app. The pictures that I posted above are very representative of how the new Remote App will look, i.e. quite Sooloos like in terms of its using Album Art for a more Graphical Respresentation I think those pictures are the interface for playing music stored on the iPad itself. I'm sure the remote app will be similar. On the iPod/Phone the remote app is practically the same as the music playback interface. No doubt Apple is onto another winner, making all other ebook readers and netbooks look like props from Blakes Seven. Have some more (joke) pics....

Interesting as this is, I am cheekily going to ask... Is this OT for this forum? (I can barely understand the posts above.)

I don't think so. The iPad is going to be a key HID for Sooloos and other music server systems.

I don't think so. The iPad is going to be a key HID for Sooloos and other music server systems. A high-intensity discharge lamp? The screens not that bright... Steve.
