Ah, OK, then clearly 400 is way off. Extrapolating over 10+ years then it seems probably more like a couple of thousand. I'd guess 25:75, enthusiasts to 'becasue they can'.

This is not totally OT. What is the published retail price of a pair of 8K's in the UK?

[quote=Simon]I suppose the best analogy is back to that of a recent topic, cars. When BMW, say, introduce a new M3/5, I wonder what % of normal (ie non-fleet) existing M3/5 owners rush out to upgrade to the more recent model? Well if your car was 12 years old, and you got back 60% of the new value of the new car..

But BMW does not promise in their brochure that their models are upgradable.
I think that is the main issue here, and also the reason why they offer the trade-in program. Not doing so could have legal consequenses.

And regarding the possibility of an MMHR input card for the 861v4. I found this in the 861v4 brochure:
The 861`s card-based architecture also brings the potential for handling more than 8 channels and for decoding future surround formats.

Jaco, no, but if I spent a bunch of money to upgrade the 861 a few years ago, is my processor 12 years old or 3-4 years old? Its really a mix. Hard to make a perfect analogy for anything. Your point is well taken. But, when it comes to autos, people do expect to be able to trade them into a dealer for some value after a few years. I agree this is different. Robbo makes a good point- but I would note the word "potential" in there. I would also imagine M has some kind of legalese somewhere in those brochures that says "specs are subject to change without notice". But the point is its better to avoid having many customers angry with you. I personally believe the UK upgrade price is about correct. The USA is too high.

Jerry, agreed, the car analogy is not making much sense.
I find the offer in the UK also ok. If the dealer can keep the traded in unit, he is likely to give some discount also i assume. Perhaps if you have more than the standard cards, some extra discount is possible.
I will wait for the Dutch price. I guess they understand they should not price it up to the USA level here. Shipping cost is like 100 Euro, and no additional taxes need to be payed inside the EU. So only the local service would be an argument, but that is not worth to pay 20% extra for me..

Is there nothing more that can be done with the current 861 v4.2? If we don't upgrade, will we be left out in the cold. The entire situation frustrates me to no end. Of course I have had my 861 for mor than 10 years. Maybe I am just unreasonable.
Rafael Very unreasonable. Just think how you would feel if your 861 v.4.25 was less than one year old! Honestly I not really pissed at M. I'm too tired for that and other brands rarely allow upgrades at all. Had I jumped on the bandwagon 10 years ago I might feel better. What is more of a dilemma to me is what is to be gained with a V.6 if I don't use speakerlink DSP speakers and I only do 5 channel. If nothing that would be great! howie

Just think how you would feel if your 861 v.4.25 was less than one year old! Out of curiosity, what is your dealer saying about this. Is he/she willing to work with you - i.e. give you the v6 trade-in at dealer cost given the age of your v4 - or nicely telling you to 'get stuffed'. Are you in the US?

howie I suspect that there are many wondering the same thing. It will take some time for a few reviews of the V6 from trustworthy sources to answer this question. It does seem counter intuitive that M would totally redesign the 861 if the improvements were less than subtle.
