But I am ready to be persuaded! (though price would determine how hard the persuasion would have to be)
Given the .2 is barely a year old, I think the price would have to be quite attractive given anyone's large (and recent) investment in a .2.

I think I suggested this before, but Meridian could multiplex the side and rear channel on the surround channel in the HD621. The G6x and 861 could demux the channels again. This would only work for 48kHz sources, but most BD are.

The idea is the HD621 upsamples the front, center and sub channels to 96kHz as usual and muxes the side and rear channels together on the 96kHz surround channel. After demuxing the G6x or 861 could upsample the side and rear channels to 96kHz too. The result is 8 channels 96Khz from 48kHz sources with only 6 channels used between HD621 and G6x/861.

This assumes that there are enough available MIPS to demux prior to upsampling (which is the first DSP operation for incoming 1x sampled PCM).

It's a nice idea, but I can't really see it happening as it would require changes to both HD621 and G6x code. M would also need to find a means of flagging that the rear channels were muxed (though I think that would probably be the easiest bit). If it does happen, great.

Demuxing doesn't take any CPU power. It is just reading data from another spot.

Technically it is very, very, very simple to do, it is more a question of wanting to do this. Flagging can be easily done using the sidechannel of the SPDIF.

But Meridian, for whom timing is everything, will need to time synchronise the two channels. I suspect this is non-trivial.

Very clever! So what could be the reason Meridian has not done this (yet)?

I do not agree with you. In real-time mode it is different than in buffered mode (as Audio Remaster works), but still very simple to do. It will take no additional CPU power. And even if their implementation would take CPU time, my proposal leaves time because only 4 channels need to be upsampled instead of 8. The other 4 are already upsampled in the HD621.

I have no idea. Maybe because it ain't a 100% solution? Personally I would say any solution is better than nothing ...

If M wishes, they can hire me ... we could even make 96kHz sources to work by first downsampling the side and rear channels to 48kHz to make it a 100% solution.

Folks -- Meridian confirmed that until they tell all their dealers about the program I shouldn't post any pricing on line. They will let me know as soon as it's OK to publish all the information (hopefully this week). In the mean time I'll do my best to answer any questions about the unit itself or the 808.3 (or anything else Meridian).

For fastest response, email me at michael@audiohigh.com.

Thanks,
Michael

No prices, some detail on the AC12

translated with google:

The AC12 links the latest processors with Meridian Link Speaker outputs with the older DSP speakers with RCA and DIN have been provided. This compact unit is equipped with RS232, SPDIF, DIN and BNC Meridian Comms Link and speaker connections.

I read somewhere that new DSP 430's will be fitted with Speakerlink.
These units, as they are in wall units, are easilly accesible from the inside.

So I am wondering if Meridian is offering an upgrade?

That is what I was told in my interview with Meridian. As far as upgrades to the DSP420, as well as all other SPDIF/COMMS fitted speakers, the new AC12 eliminates the need.
