The only explanation I can see for Meridian delaying releasing an apodising firmware upgrade to exisiting G series processors is to differentiate the new 2010 versions and "force" upgrading hardware on those who want this feature.
This represents a clear break from previous policy but is logical in that they must, as a commercial company, sell their intellectual property for as much money as they can. Giving apodising away to existing purchasers is not a good profitable decision. So, why not charge for future firmware updates? Most of us would probably not mind too much.
This is not the same as bug fixes which should be FOC.

Charging for firmware updates is one thing, but expecting customers to sell one G68 to buy another????!!!!!! I don't buy that.

The G08.2 includes apodizing, per the Meridian website. We know that the HD621 delivers apodizing for decoded multi-channel sources delivered on HDMI. These, and the 808, are now the only Meridian source components. They can justifiably claim to deliver apodizing at source in line with their advice.
A basic full Meridian system of G08.2, HD621 and G6x is therefore capable of delivering apodized sound from CDs, DVDs(from players with HDMI out - like an entry-level Sony) and blurays - i.e. all the current digital removable disc-based sources.
What's missing (as discussed elsewhere) is (1) the capability for apodizing undecoded DD and DTS feeds (which we are not sure that even an 861v6 can do) and (2) apodizing on analogue sources.
Enter the notional G62 (I have to call it something) a two channel analogue and digital interface which does A2D at 24/96 and delivers apodized signals over speakerlink (or SPDIF) to DSP speakers or the G6x processor.
Still doesn't resolve the DD/DTS source problem though.
Sorry about speculating here - it just followed the flow.

Still doesn't resolve the DD/DTS source problem though. It would if the "G62" decoded vanilla DD/DTS as well.

Then it would need 5.1 outputs (and apodizing) and become a entry-level processor for DSP-only systems. I think we can see Meridian's conundrum now.

It would make sense to swap everything inside if the 861v4 is simply a 6 channel design and one of the last DSP's makes the 2 extra channels.
Than the bounded OE14 and IE44 make some sense too..

Meridian obviously want their customers to add a HD621 to their systems to get the appodising feature which is not devastating blow to the pocket compared to how much has been spent on the system total.
HOWEVER
I was going to purchase a HD621 soon, but after seeing all what is coming out of CES im not so sure. My friend called me from the show after a demo on some of the 3D TV products on show and he said it was phenomenal!!! and many brands are due to release this year.
Most of us are first movers of the very cutting edge in quality in A/V tech, and I for one will be keen to look into a 3D screen and new BD spinner soon. The thing is to buy into 3D you need HDMI 1.4. As I understand it the HD621 will not be able to handle this spek. Who knows if 3D will take off....... maybe it will be huge, maybe not. I guess we will have to see. I am in no rush however to rush out and buy a HD621.
Look on the bright side......
At least Meridian only need to make a HD621.2 with HDMI 1.4 to support 3D so that those who do want to venture into 3D will not have to scrap their entire amp. Look at the top end Pioneer/arcam/even Mark Levinson amps and processor ranging into the thousands of pounds will not be able to upgrade their kit. They will have no choice but to buy a new Processor which is a real deal breaker.

Thanks for the posts, Frank.
You did not mention the F80. Does this mean it has also been discontinued (a lot of dealers have been selling off ex-dem). No, the F80 and the AD88, as well as the projectors, are still in the lineup.

[I'm already doing something very, very similar by routing the Digital Out of my Media Player thru my Video Processor and then HDMI out into my HD621
So, I suppose most of my comments are more of a generic nature in wanting to Apodize SPDIF sources in the 861
Another thing is that I had compared SPDIF Out of my Player thru Apodizing in the 808.2i versus SPDIF converted to HDMI thru my HD621. I did feel there was a repeatable and noticeable difference between the two
This echos what Meridian themselves have been saying as well as what Frank's says about "various product's architecture and MIPS dictating the implementation of Apodizing etc." To confirm, you prefer the HD621's apodizing over the 808.2i's implementation? Interesting.

Perhaps I am missing somthing but as I understand it, you only Apodise Once. So For HDMI you have the HD621. For CD you have the G and 800 series players. Anything else could be catered for with Apodising in the Speakers. Why would you want Apodising in the Procesors? From Meridians POV why shouldnt they keep the advantage for their Players and sources, where they manufacture them? This gives people a reason to buy a Meridian CD Spinner and or Sooloos. They have to make money after all. Perhaps I am missing somthing here. Cheers Chris
