It could be that this is a marketing decision and not just a technically necessary one.
Offering an upgrade for the 861v2/v3/v4 will impact sales of the 861v6. I understand, but i already payed 22.5K guilders (10K euro) for the unit years back. Than the upgrades were like 2700 Euro for V2 - V3 and 700 Euro V3 - V4 Next to that 2x 850 Euro for OA13 cards, and 1100 Euro for a IA45 Total costs over the years 16200 Euro. Normally the price for the upgrades was about the same as the increase to a new unit. That was always very good i think, i never had the idea i payed too much for upgrading. Also 2nd hand prices stayed ok. If i would get a fully loaded modell back for the price difference between what i payed now and the new price, it would be like it always was and i would be a happy person. But if i cannot keep using my current OA13 for the subwoofer only, the IA45 for 5.1 channel input it would simply cost me like 2200 euro more to upgrade things i already have and are happy with. The new price does not seem to bad, 11.500 pound (around 13500 Euro) If it contains a OE14, IE44 and IA04 by default. Add OA18 for 1000 perhaps and the new modell would be cheaper than my old upgraded unit.. Well lets wait. I did not even use the OE12 / AC11 and the DSP speakers yet..

Ronnie,
Instead of spending $20k you could do:
take the 2- channel SPDIF signal from any source -> route it through Gefen DVI+SPDIF to HDMI converter into HDMI -> HDMI into HD621 -> Speakerlink on 861.
I am using this set up for apodizing my Sooloos signal since last March, it is night and day on the sound quality. Apodizing is really game changing good!
Total "upgrade" cost: 200.
Mirek Thanks Mirek I'm already doing something very, very similar by routing the Digital Out of my Media Player thru my Video Processor and then HDMI out into my HD621 So, I suppose most of my comments are more of a generic nature in wanting to Apodize SPDIF sources in the 861 Another thing is that I had compared SPDIF Out of my Player thru Apodizing in the 808.2i versus SPDIF converted to HDMI thru my HD621. I did feel there was a repeatable and noticeable difference between the two This echos what Meridian themselves have been saying as well as what Frank's says about "various product's architecture and MIPS dictating the implementation of Apodizing etc."

Mirek Out of curiosity, a) I assume you are using the Digital Coax out of the Sooloos?? b) Does the Gefen Converter generate a Blank Video Stream carrier for the Audio Stream, or are you inputting another source into the DVI Input of that Converter?? Thanks

Well VK, you said you thought that Meridian should put some mileage between the 860 and G68!
What you didn't say was that they should make the G61R and G68 a bitter disappointment in order to achieve that (no appodising and no 8 channels).

Thanks for the posts, Frank.
You did not mention the F80. Does this mean it has also been discontinued (a lot of dealers have been selling off ex-dem).

We'll see how things pan out, but I don't feel that denying the G6x apodizing and eight channel inputs is the way to do it. This will definitely lose Meridian sales from those who can afford the G6x, but not the 861. Silly.

Regarding all new 861 - people should see it as a positive not a negative. You don't suddenly re design the architecture after 4 previous versions if it's going to be your swansong.

According the Ken: "We had a monumental moment of clarity - Meridian is a DSP loudspeaker company." According to Ken, all of the DVD players, including the 800, have been discontinued and the resources reallocated to the development of Sooloos. The only disc spinners Meridian will make going forward are the G08 and the 808. Three processors are in the lineup - 861, G68 and G61R. All have apodizing. I am not sure if there will be a one-box offering. Loudspeakers include the DSP3100, DSP5200, DSP7200 and DSP8000. All have apodizing except the DSP3100. The G61R and the G68 do not have an MMHR or 4xSPDIF input for 7.1 discrete. The 861 has an MMHR input for connection to the HD621. The G61R has all single-ended analog outputs. The G68 has eight balanced outputs and two single ended outputs analog output (Rz and Lz). More to follow. Photos of the Rear Panels of the Meridian 61rR, G68 and 861 V6. Correction: the G61R and G68 do NOT have apodizing. The 861 obviously doesn't have a motherboard. My error completely. The implications of this have become clearer with your later post, Frank (for which may thanks). Meridian's damascene moment is a bit strange. Does this mean they will be abandoning the 810? And for many people they were the company that adapted a Marantz CD player to make it truly hi-fi. And it was this that made their reputation which then enabled them to sell DSPs. So they only produce processors and 621s etc in order to be able to sell DSPs? They may be able to keep it digital from the studio to the speaker, their proud boast, but increasingly not with Meridian equipment! [When Paul had a similar moment he was told not to kick against the pricks. I should not have said that but could not resist. Sorry. Must be light-headed from all the news: kind of de-mob happy?]

What I cannot fathon is why the push of apodizing into the speakers, if I am understanding it correctly this only comes into play if the speakers are upsampling. Given upsampling is likley to happen in the processor apodizing or not) or the HD621, will the apodizing be used in the speaker. Would it not have been far more benefical to put the money and research once into the processor rather than having to pay for it in every speaker - or is this just the synical marketing plan. Back to HS=Y/N debate.

Doesn't DSP stand for "Digital Sound Processing"?

More to the point, David, is that we were told that, optimally, apodising should be carried out at the beginning not the end of the chain.
I think it has been included in every speaker because it is part of their upsampling. But this does not, of course excuse the omission from the G61R and G68.
