I am a G68 owner. Although MMHR input would have been nice, I did not expect it and, given the dearth of discrete 7.1 content, it is not essential to me. It is clear that they have reserved the cutting edge for the 861, and that is how it should be.

so are they replacing all the processing boards ? if so, how much additional processing power does the 861 gain ?

Interesting that this seems to indicate 2 cards but it looks like one in the back panel pictures, so maybe it is possible to have just part of the upgrade if that's all that's required.

I suspect, given the information we have so far, that a 'complete' transformation from v4 to v6 will be pretty pricey - although Bob S. has said in the past that they would only offer cost-effective upgrades, so we'll see. Perhaps there will be gradations of upgrades offered, so, for example, if some owners choose to continue to use OA03/OA13 cards, they will be able to.

Personally, I'd want MMHR input capability via the IE44 card, apodizing on all digital inputs, and perhaps the OA18 card for my front channels.

I do not believe all the old things need replacing.
I see stil the C00 card without USB. If you change the lot, why not add those things the G series has ?
The power supply in my 861 got changed for free a few years back, so i assume it will not be very expensive. It does not look very complex, so more or less standard parts.

The backplane look just passive from what i saw when i peeked inside when the distributor upgraded my from V2 to V3 and V3 to V4

I don't think 861 upgrade will be pricey. CPU/processing does not seem to be different from v4 to v6 right?. For analog 861 I am interested in IE44 (for newer HD621 connection) and OA08/OA18..that's about it. Hope M can make it a modular upgrade.

Ohh 800 RIP. I am glad M has decided on clear strategy to move forward.

Cheers,
Kishore

Backplane is passiv, have lot of pictures if interest.
I agree with you jaco, from the economy point of view its make sense to change the backplane.
Also i trust Mr. Stuart as to think on his customers and keep the upgrade path open for sensefull money and make not technical gimmicks.
When people allways cryimg its getting a pricey upgrade, then the new mangement will "do" this for us....

I asked this in the other thread but I think the info on apaodising got moved into here?

So, sorry for asking in two threads but...

Do you think existing G68's and G61R's will get apodising added through a firmware upgrade??

That is the $60k question. It has been mentioned by M inQ&A answers, implied in comments at HH2 last year and recently by some dealers (who we assume get info from M) that it will be a firmware update.

It is 12+ months since the Q&A however we do appreciate that 2009 was a tough year all round.

All good things come to HH'ers who wait... I think is the motto we have for this question.

I reckon that upgraded 861v4s will not be the same as new 861v6s. This is no different to previous 861 upgrades where, for instance, you didn't get the very latest analogue output cards, unless you specifically asked and paid for them.

It's also worth remembering that Meridian makes running tweaks to all of the 861 cards so that, for instance, the IE42 in an upgraded v3 will not be identical to the IE42 in a new v4... (sorry guys) This is why I'd be very wary of buying "bargain" 861s which have been upgraded from v1 or v2 status.

Finally, I'm sure the cards are all distinct, even though the backplate (not backplane) is joined for the IE44 and OE14. It will be interesting to see if the OE14 SpeakerLink output card is now mandatory for all *new* 861s.
