I have just noticed from Meridian's data sheets for their 808.3, 861v4, ID40, G61R, and G68 that their shipping date is February 2010.

If that date is met it will add much more to Meridian's achievement already with their January 2010 product announcement.

So you are saying there is 2 Channel Cat5/RJ45 (SpeakerLink) and 8 Channel Cat5/RJ45 (MMHR)?

The SpeakerLink will also provide the Comms channel to the Sooloos for the next/prev/pause/play from the MSR that is mentioned, which the MMHR doesn't.

Now that 861 V6 is announced does that mean that 861 V5 was the one so many wanted and continued to wait so long for but never got? If so then it's nice that we have not had to wait for V6.

b) Seeing as how you could choose to connect a Sooloos Source to an 861 V6 via the Speakerlink input already included as standard on the IE44 card, for what reasons would I choose to spend an extra $2,000 on an ID40 Sooloos Card??

I read that using the ID40 Card, I can Control the Playlist on the Sooloos using the Meridian MSR+ and also a few other functions. Handy but hardly worth the extra $2,000

But then I go on to read the information below

Really, really, really hope I'm wrong here. But I cannot think of any other plausible explanation as to

a) why "Apodizing" is not mentioned as a Feature.
b) It's also the only rational explanation as to why Meridian could justify charging $2,000 extra for the card

Even more worryingly, if I'm correct, then the ID40 has ONLY an RJ45 connection for connection to a Sooloos. If the ID40 is the ONLY route to Apodizing in the 861-V6, then that means that other SB3 / Sonos Media Players cannot avail of Apodizing thru the 861-V6!!!

Would welcome any other plausible explanations!!! Really hope I'm wrong here

Hi Ronnie,

I'm with you on this. It seems an odd absence from the documented line up. If it were such a good thing and we were to still hold faith that updates would be coming as we were once informed, I can't see how it makes sense that apodizing is not a key feature of the 861v6 or the other bits of kit. To suggest it's only for the flaghip player doesn't makes sense as it exists in the HD621 and 5200's.

As for explanations ?......

- it could be proving technically challenging to do within the existing upsampling architecture. My dealer certainly indicated that 8k's might not get apodizing via a f/w update (he also said processors would though). Whether it was worth limiting MRC filters to allow apodizing cycles to run would be an interesting test I expect. My G68 is back for repair at the moment so they'd be welcome to test it on mine wink

- it could be that M may proceed with a $$ charging model for the apodizing updates. Whilst very un-Meridian like it could be a necessity from a business p.o.v. How this would be controlled and distributed I am not sure.

- Just a result of a rushed publication. We believe that resources have been impacted in recent months at HQ so stuff like this will have a likelihood of happening. i.e. it's just an ommission...perhaps.

Cheers

Well, Meridian's strategy looks to be going in the right direction. As we come out of a recession it makes sense to lauch a slew of new products and upgrades (the classic injunction "design yourself out of a recession").

The new 808 was certainly a surprise.

And good news to now have SmartLink and SpeakerLink connectivity.

Thank goodness the UK prices are not so frightening as the US prices seemed to suggest (and the price of the G61R will surely help them extend their market).

Model rationalisation will help reduce costs and confusion.

All in all a very good announcement.

I agree, the product hierarchy, product evolution and prices are indeed compelling.

There has clearly been a lot of long-term planning going on behind the scenes. The communications we have received in the last couple of days are generally well put together and clear. Any criticisms over lack of detail really relate to our intense interest, though I acknowledge Ronnie's concerns over equivocation around apodizing.

I think the reasons for the warehouse clearance and the subsidesed costs of kit recently through trade-ins are now apparent

My re-construction plans are under review!

Why so pessimistically Ronnie?

The ID40 doc refer

"The host 800 Series product is then able to use its own powerful DSP capabilities to perform advanced audio enhancement processing.......The host 800 Series product is then able to use its own powerful DSP capabilities to perform advanced audio enhancement processing, using triple FIFO buffering and upsampling lower sample rate audio streams to 88.2 or 96kHz using Meridian`s [font:Arial Black]world renowned ‘apodising` upsampling technology, and in the case of 861 apply other processing, such as Trifield, for improved presentation on a multi-channel system.

That means the 800 series can apodizing itself-so- and so iam with you-that apodizing should also be available
allways and not depending on the input card.

If it happened as you descripted-extra MIPS in the ID 40-the it will explain a LITTLE the price
of the ID 40.From where you have the price info?
But that also means if you want to connect the 800, the800 have to get a proper outputcard to connect it to the ID40.

I do not understand why this should happened in the case of 800,
because the 800 should have enough MIPS for apodizing and have allready a 8ch card(with aux) the OE22 -and the 861 have allready the ID42.
AND, its a 800 series product....not only the 861 and 808....

Ronnie, iam with you, apodizing should be available at least for M components(to force their equipment sale)
and why spending extra money on that for exististing users(they allready paid with their equipmnet the development of M).

For example, there are 5 Digital and 6 Analog Inputs on the current 808.2i. The 808.2i Data Sheet makes specific reference to the fact that ALL these Inputs are Apodized internally in the 808.2i. Contrast that with zero mention in the Data Sheet for Meridian's "Flagship" Preamp / Processor, the 861-v6

Why relegate the only mention of Apodizing to the ID40 Card which

a) Costs an extra $2,000+
b) Will only accept an RJ45 Input from a Sooloos. (i.e. the card has no Coax or Optical inputs to accept other Media Players)

As I said, I sincerely hope that this is just an (extremely poor) Literature Oversight on Meridian's behalf, but all the pointers appear to be pointing away from Native Apodizing of ALL Inputs into the 861-v6, which is obviously what all of us here have been waiting patiently for

Will be delighted to be wrong on this one!!!

I think they just haven't done the software yet. Disappointing though.

I'm kind of confused with the new products;

I have a 808i.2 and a a 861V4 with old style (SPDIF only) dsp8000s, one dsp7kvc and two dsp3100s.

My Pioneer blu-ray player connects with the 861 through a HD621.

Now what exactly can I upgrade with these new announcements?

- my 808i.2 has a speakerlink output so I guess the speakerlink input card for the 861 would work here although how much benefit is debatable since there is only one coaxial digital cable connected to my cdp anyway

- my HD621 connects to the 861 with 3 SPDIF cables so the speakerlink input on the 861 would reduce this to one cable?

Apart from this I am unsure of any other changes that are possible. I don't have a Sooloos (yet) so the Sooloos card is no use as of now.

Any comments welcome!

Cheers
