One thing I am not clear on: does the MMHR in and 8x Speakerlink out necessarily mean that the 861 v6 has 8 channel architecture and can therefore deal with 7.1 channels of lossless PCM from input to output? Nowhere does it actually say that, which surprises me.

Yes it does. All Meridian processors since the original 565 (I think) have been able to support eight output channels. It's only been the lack of 7.1 sources which has been the real limitation. Remember that the processors synthesize 7.1 channels from 5.1 so, in once sense, the processors have less to do!

Having looked at the 861 Data Sheet in detail and several times over, a few comments

a) There is a worrying lack of ANY mention of Apodizing. As this is such a HUGE part of what the 808.2 does and is such a differentiating feature for Meridian, it strikes me that Meridian would have it "front and centre" if Apodizing was actually included. Goodness knows, I hope I'm wrong!!!!

b) Seeing as how you could choose to connect a Sooloos Source to an 861 V6 via the Speakerlink input already included as standard on the IE44 card, for what reasons would I choose to spend an extra $2,000 on an ID40 Sooloos Card??

I read that using the ID40 Card, I can Control the Playlist on the Sooloos using the Meridian MSR+ and also a few other functions. Handy but hardly worth the extra $2,000

But then I go on to read the information below

Originally Posted by Meridian ID40 Data Sheet and also 861V6 Data Sheet
The card offers simple connection to a Sooloos system through its RJ45 style Ethernet port and renders audio streamed across that network. The host 800 Series product is then able to use its own powerful DSP capabilities to perform advanced audio enhancement processing, Upsampling lower sample rate audio streams through Meridian`s own upsampling techniques, and in the case of 861 apply other processing, such as Trifield, for improved presentation on a multi-channel system.

So I begin to wonder if Apodizing is ONLY available in the 861-V6 by using the ID40 Card?? It might explain where the extra MIPS are coming from

Really, really, really hope I'm wrong here. But I cannot think of any other plausible explanation as to

a) why "Apodizing" is not mentioned as a Feature.
b) It's also the only rational explanation as to why Meridian could justify charging $2,000 extra for the card

Even more worryingly, if I'm correct, then the ID40 has ONLY an RJ45 connection for connection to a Sooloos. If the ID40 is the ONLY route to Apodizing in the 861-V6, then that means that other SB3 / Sonos Media Players cannot avail of Apodizing thru the 861-V6!!!

Would welcome any other plausible explanations!!! Really hope I'm wrong here

I wonder if the UK prices mentioned in the data sheets don't include VAT? If they do, then the UK<>USA prices are becoming even more distorted from the exchange rate than they ever have been. At 5000 (inc VAT):$12000 for a G68 that's 2.82:1 and at 11500:$26000 foran 861v6 it's 2.66:1. Meanwhile xe.com is quoting 1.61:1 today. Meridian need someone better at hedging currency smile

Noticed the same

The Data Sheets specifically mention "UK RRP" which means "UK Recommended Retail Price" which DOES include 17.5% VAT

When you factor in that the US Sales Price almost definitely doesn't include State Sales Tax at average of say 8.5%, then the numbers get even more skewed

What is "SpeakerLink" input for on an 861V6.

It's not MMHR, it's not SmartLink. What the heck is it?

Why why would you run "Speakers" (SpeakerLink) INTO the 861?

George,

2 channel balenced digital audio input (RJ45) to connect the output (RJ45) of say an 808i.2(3) or Sooloos Control:10 into.

Regards,
Carl.

So you are saying there is 2 Channel Cat5/RJ45 (SpeakerLink) and 8 Channel Cat5/RJ45 (MMHR)?

Analog inputs provided by IA04 offer superior audio performance compared to
analog inputs on older versions of 861. IA04 can be configured to provide up to
six stereo inputs or up to two six-channel inputs. This level of performance and
flexibility minimizes the need for additional analog input cards to be specified,
reducing complexity and 861 configuration prices for many customers.

Still feels like things are fundamentally 6-channel input.
It seems to me that if they did support 8-channel input through out why limit analog input to 6 channels on a brand new card.
