I'm going out on limb here, and believe the whole G Series will be pass away and be replaced by a new series of Meridian kit.

I fear that I see signs of the end looming as has been my luck over the years...it started with Cinepro when the then founder passed away (although they have been resurrected by others)...it next went to TAG McLaren who died...it now may be Meridian's turn with the constant thread been me being out lots of money...

As one who is in the midst of upgrading my home theater using M 861 + M HD621 + M 558 + M557 + Triad in-wall speakers + Ashly DSP ( http://www.ashly.com/neprocessor.html ) I *AM NOT HAPPY* that M is discontinuing their analogue commitment...all I see is more money flowing out of my bank account as I move on to another company as I already have a somewhat sour taste in my mouth that the promised support/upgradability of the 800 (in terms of a DVD player) was never delivered on this is -- in today's world with dBpoweramp and SONOS -- nothing more than a $25,000 brick!

End of rant...

We don't do firestorms, Asa, we are far too well behaved here for things like that, aren't we!

Of course the remote is not as high a priority as sound quality. But realistically speaking, it would make my life easier if every time I picked up the MSR my wife didn't start singing the Pacman theme. She claims it is something that came with her old Atari. You see what I have to put up with. :-)

She is of course an iPhone owner and is reliant on that level of care being taken over the man-machine interface.

Thanks for the kind words.

As for your second point, if Meridian had to referee every domestic joke / jibe etc then they would truly be up against it. If your wife likes Apple products for their style and ease of use then few could argue; but if its sound and vision quality you are after then Meridian should sort the fundamentals first.

+1 (but I am still concerned about recruiting new, young people to Meridian)

When I showed my wife the DSP5200s and said I was going to get them her reply was "Oh for Gods sake, it will look like we've invited R2D2 and his mate round for the evening!!" crazy

They just don't get it. grin

Does anyone expect an announcement regarding speakers? What about a revision to the 8000s, ie dsp8200s? Or a replacement for the dsp5500s in the $20K USD range?

John

You over simplify as re-wiring for DSPs at this points makes them cost prohibitive as I would have to open a number of walls, floors and ceilings to do that...were it as simple as you suggest then yes I would agree...

AV cabling - Planing Ahead.

When I re-decorated my sitting room / music room, I installed ducting and hidden access points in the walls and ceiling. Now I can I pull any required cables though and terminat them as required.

Mind you, at the time, my wife thought I was crasy taking the room apart to install them.

Regards,
Carl.

Speakerlink card is a no brainer. Will there be a HDMI card for 861 (thus making HD621 redundant?)

Of course not.

To quote Bob Stuart directly:
Quote
We have said it before, but let`s go one more time. We do not like the implications [of HDMI] for audio performance, video performance or for upgrade trajectories for audio and video that are implied in putting an HDMI repeater in a surround processor. As long as we let digital video transmission (or even worse video processing) into the audio processor, or if it becomes hard-bonded to the video playback ground, the sound MUST and DOES suffer.

We have demonstrated these effects of video on audio enough times. We can also show the reverse. Great sound and picture are what we do, and the BEST architecture is to separate audio and video at the earliest point in the chain and to keep video out of anything that handles either the last de-jitter or any analogue audio I/O.

When audio must arrive over HDMI we hope to offer a solution which is better, cheaper and friendlier to both new and existing customers.
Meridian has already clearly demonstrated (in 800 and G9x) the benefits of decoding in the player.
