Hey Folks,
I know that the quality maybe doesn't absolutely compare the the finest studio mastering jobs but I've really been enjoying some of the Quad 1/4" tapes and LP's that have been posted to the internet as DVD-A MLP's. I love PF's Wish You Were Here, and probably won't ever listen to the audiophile LP that I have again.
I may be way off base in justifying downloading these items in that I've already paid the royalties for the content when I purchased normal CD's and LP's of the same material. I don't encourage anybody to download anything that they've never paid for.

If you think I'm a criminal this may not be the place to discuss it. I don't download anything that I haven't already paid the royalties to the artists already. If they want more money for the surround mix I would be happy to send a check, or they could simply release it.

I see that a lot of King Crimson recordings have been re-released and remastered including a DVD-A recording of 'In the Court of the Crimson King'. This is one of my best ever albums and was a key moment in my early love of prog rock. Have looked on Amazon UK but not listed yet. Has anyone heard the DVD-A version?

Haven't heard ITCOTCK yet , my deluxe edition should ship early next week after manufacturing delays , but I have heard ' Red' in the same series and it's quite majestic what Porcupine Tree's Steven Wilson has been able to eke out of these recordings .

Robert Fripp occasionally plays support to PT when they tour , he seems to get on very well with SW .

Thanks, looks like its a few days yet before it is released. Have never listened to Porcupine Tree, may give them a go. If there a particular album that you would recommend, is it like most groups that the first 2 or 3 albums are the best?

PT's catalogue is so varied I would suggest starting in the middle . Steven Wilson has so many side projects : ' Blackfield' a poppier song-based band ; No-Man , a more ' ambient' pop sensibility ; Bass Communion , a heavier 'noise' or 'sound' styled experimental sound and , SW's excellent solo album from last year ' Insurgentes' .


Fortunately , SW loves the extra quality of DVD-A so some of their back catalogue is available here :

Starting with song-cycles and moving into the rockier territory culminating in the ' concept' current album this is the release order : Lightbulb Sun , ' Stupid Dream ' , In Absentia , Deadwing ( personal favourite ) , Fear of a Blank Planet ' and ' The Incident ' all available on CD/DVD-A sets .

Try any of these : Stupid Dream , Deadwing and The Incident.


Be careful , they can be quite addictive

At the HH2 event at the Mothership, in giving us a demo of the 808.2i / DSP8000 combo, Bob Stuart introduced us to Alice Pelle, an Italian jazz artiste and her album "Little Dream".

I believe the track he played was "GiorgnioNotte". I've been looking to source the album ever since and, just today, came across this French web site:

which offers a commercial download service. The site is French language only! I picked lossless versions of the Alice Pelle album and Michael Jackson's "This Is It". They offer two lossless formats, WMA and M4A. The pricing of each was EUR 9.99 for CD quality and EUR 12.99 for lossless.

Playing each of these (via a Squeezebox into DSP 7000s, with no benefit of apodizing) the sound is stunning. I particularly liked a couple of stripped-down versions of Jacko tracks. I do like Alice Pelle's "GiorgnioNotte" and am beginning to get into one or two other Italian-language tracks (but I'm not sure I'm so keen on the English-language tracks on the album).

I hope that's useful to folks.

Yes, Porcupine Tree is a good group that's really interested in good sound. I attended their Stockholm concert a few weeks ago and the sound quality was really great, as was the concert.

I hadn't heard The Incident before, but I got to hear almost all of it during this concert. After a couple of warm-ups they played CD1 in its entirety, after the break we got one or two songs from CD2 as well.

Didn't get anything from Cd2 when I saw them ( I was hoping for ' Remember me Lover ' ) hopefully I'll be luckier when I see them in December !!

That looks interesting, Kal - thanks for the tip. I always thought the Nonesuch recording's downfall was its rather 'manufactured' sound - like they'd ripped the orchestra to bits then pieced it all back together - even though it has its moments: there's a bit where the single piano key strikes through the quiet strings that I find quite special (but is this just the music surviving the recording process?), and Dawn Upshaw is always worth listening to.
