Digital Audio Broadcast? That would be my guess... I've been holding off from buying a Magnum Dynalab Analog tuner beacuse you can't make analog FM crap sound much better than the crap it is. I hope that the U.S.A is much closer to providing digital audio broadcasting soon... I forget what the latest on that is... I only listen to radio while I'm in the car.. DAB in very high quality would be incredible. If you think about it, each station only has to brodacast one signal, not a whole bunch as Cable and Sattelite must do. You would think that radio stations could indeed brodcast a very ROBUST signal--with only one channel per radio station, the could easily broadcast the maximum bandwidth that technolgy will allow. Any chance of actually Broadcasting an MLP signal? I would love to get DVD-Audio quality through the air...

I believe they showed the DAB last year at the Bristol show. I don't think it is for the US market.

The Bristol show is very interesting in that Bristol is quite a small UK town in the west of the UK, just past Bath, Bath is famous because it is a Roman Spar town (hot springs) and has some wonderful Regency Architecture. Both Bath and Bristol have resonable universities (after Oxford and Cambridge, Meridian is in Huntingdon which is very near to Cambridge).

The Bristol show is held in a hotel, just one! that is very small by US standards, but is very much part of the HI-FI calendar in the UK.

I will certainly be going.

Forgot to mention that DAB is the ditial broadcast standard for the UK, don't know what standard is used, but would be surprised if it is not MPEG 2 audio in some form, it maybe even MP3!

The only reason that digital exist in the UK at all is because the broadcasters can broadcast more channels, typically they do not care about quality! Whilst we have digital TV it is no better than analogue, in fact it is often not as good!

We do not have HDTV in any form at all!!!

We'll expect a full report! I have very fond memories of Bath. It's a beautiful town and they have a wonderful music festival there in the summer. I remember seeing (hearing) the Beaux Arts Trio performing some breathtaking Mozart in a relatively small hall.

this is some old info:
"Meridian 504
Planned for early 1999, Meridian is looking to launch an upgrade to its existing FM tuner, the 504, to provide reception for both DAB and FM.
Digital technology has become one of Meridian Audio Ltd's hallmarks from CD players to surround processors and loudspeakers. The company sees digital radio receivers as a natural progression for its range. Based in Huntingdon, Cambridge, the company was set up in 1985."
An this is a reply form Meridian on Wednesday, January 17, 2001
"This project was put back as the hardware was developing rapidly and we wanted to put more effort into DVD - Audio.
We are now Beta testing a 564 DAB Tuner so we should have more informationon our web site in a few months.
I hope the delay has not inconvenienced you to much."

Is there an upgrade possible to the 504 or will it only be available as a standalone product ? Does one need a cable or antenna ?

N.B. DAB is a european standard as far as I am aware. Don't know about US. In the US they use different FM frequency steps as well......
