Hitchhikers Trial and Error FAQ (We are open to corrections)

Axis Settings

  • Q: Can I have different Axis Settings in my HT?
  • A: Officially No. Unofficially if you set them seperately in each speaker and never touch the setting in the Preamp it will stick. But it is not recommended because it may skew phase timing between speakers. Meridian groups the Axis setting together to raise or lower the entire image.
  • Q: Do Horizontal Centers do axis?
  • A: Physically No. But to match timing of vertical speaker axis setting it may still apply it.
  • Q: Why can't I hear axis change the image?
  • A: It may depend a lot on specific room characteristics and your hearing.
  • Q: How much does it move per step?
  • A: From some reverse engining of the manual stating max height of someone standing at 8 ft away and to minimum of someone sitting at 8 feet comes to about 16ft to 1ft ratio (at 8ft 1 step is .5 ft height, at 16 ft 1 step is 1 ft in height).

Trifield Width Settings

  • Q: Why does Width setting have so little effect?
  • A: It depends on your physical setup and what you have distances set to and how well matched your center speaker is.

Trifield Depth Settings

  • Q: Why does Depth setting have so little effect?
  • A: It depends on your physical setup and what you have distances set to and how well matched your center speaker is.
  • Q: Why does Depth setting sound like it jumps in and out of phase on each step?
  • A: See Q:Why does Depth setting have so little effect?
  • Q: Will Trifield work with no center?
  • A: Depends what you are asking. Trifield DSP Preset derives a center channel and ambience. The Front will drop to Stereo and the ambience will remain.
  • Q: Why is there no better documentation?
  • A: Because Meridian has no idea either, just kidding. Because Everyones rooms are different we cannot predict every parameters behavior we just allow parameters that are available on the different algorithms.

External DSP

  • Q: Can I feed the DSP Speaker output to an external Room Correction system?
  • A: Yes, but you have to tell the system that you have 18bit DSP Speakers which will shut off MHR Encryption. You will loose 24/96 capability.
  • Q: Can, I control volume?
  • A: Sort of, on some processors you can fake it by changing it to Analog Speakers (Only on the front panel). It will then digitally attenuate the outputs (which is not a great thing and may confuse some external systems).
