Surely the 861 is still potentially decoding Dolby Digital, then down-mixing it to 2 channels? Bypassing it would mean sending stereo PCM to the DSPs.

There were (IIRC) some opinions round here that native PCM is as good as DD in that configuration. I thought so too but now think there is a touch more dynamic range and impact from DD (great for action films) but that the timbre of PCM is preferable (better for dialogue and music) - not sure I could tell the difference blind though.

An HD621 could extract the hi-res soundtrack from blurays which should be better than DD and may well be of value for concert/opera type material.

But if you are running just a coax from Oppo to 861v8 you can just set the Oppo to do the downmixing to stereo in its setup.

Problem solved until you get surround speakers and it will do this in full lossless quality the complete chain.

But if the Oppo does the downmix then surely it must also have done the DD decode, so one would get PCM at that point.

One might hope that a £14k processor does that job better than the Oppo but who knows? Depending on the PCM rate coming out of the Oppo then the 861 upsampling may add some improvements. So many options...

Who knew a two-channel setup could be complicated? wink

If Oppo was direct to 5200SE's they would upsample too.

And you wouldn't lose 3dB because you can't use DIRECT if 861 is decoding.

Can an 861v8 decode DD and upsample? I know 861v4 (v6?) couldn't.

EDIT: Just did a quick check the 861v8 still can't upsample and decode.

I think you will want the HD621. It is a little bit long in the tooth. If you want to do 4K etc, then just split the video before the HD621.

I keep hearing they will announce a HD621 replacement or upgrade, and I've been hearing that for a long time now. It is logical that they should do this, but so far its been nothing.

If I were you, I'd see about finding a good price on a HD621 and making it work in your system today.

The order I would invest would be

A Sub-woofer (or two)
A Set of Rears
A Center
A HD621

First 3 could be in any order.

The Center needs to be REALLY Good, you can get away with rears being a notch down.

By the time the first 3 upgrades are done, maybe an HD621.2 would be available.

+1.
While I take on board George’s list, a used HD621 would cost very little in the scheme of things. Also, if you are not considering expanding beyond 7.1 audio, I don’t see why it should ever become redundant.

The HD621mk2 is unlikely to do any video processing, so in the longer term if you are serious about 4k then why not consider adding a box that can process 4k video like one the Lumagen Pro models. This would provide HDMI switching, outstanding video processing and up to 4 HDMI outputs. One of these could be configured just for hires audio and sent to the HD621. The latter would then become an audio stripping device for your 861 and not a part of the video chain.

Thank you everyone. Lots of things to think about!

I will get a 4k projector at some point but will wait for prices to fall. In the short term I'll focus, no pun intended!, on getting a projector screen to improve picture quality. Incidentally I'm currently using the Oppo to handle the HDMI output from the Sky Q box.

My initial upgrade thoughts were:
Projector screen - much better than a wall…
Centre - 5200SE HC/VC- prioritising clearer dialogue in movies,
Rears - DSP3200 - over, sound effects.
and then decide between Subs, a new projector or an hopefully upgraded HD621.

I'll add a Lumagen (or similar) to my research list!

At least I have one firm decision so far. Digital coax it is smile.
