I just got my Meridian 218 yesterday and play MQA and other TIDAL files on it, I have to say that DSP8000 speakers paired with Meridian source give is a huge performance upgrade!

When I connected to other source the speakers were "OK", for example I connected it to Sonos connect but the sounds was flat ... and not hi-end but then when I go back to a Meridian product eg. 218 ,,, other it’s just a WIFI streamer basically ! the sonic improvement was massive!

It’s interesting to see how Meridian’s line of product needs to be consistently used to keep the Meridian sounding its best!

I think Sonos will sound flat on any high end speaker system, especially if you are playing lossy music.

I have previously used MacMini with an asynchronous USB connector and playing FLAC via Pure Music and it sounded great. But I prefer Sooloos via an ID41 card!

But yes, Meridian have been building high end hifi for 40 years.

Cheers
Greg

It will be even better when you update those 8ks to SE.

Although the upgrade itself costs more than a pretty hot amp and speaker combo... If money’s no object though...

I don’t think Meridian would claim to be the top end digital source, it would be interesting to know how some of the top end sources sound through 8ks.

IMO, the 218 is an underrated product around here. Having owned an 818v3, I think the 218 is every bit as good when used to feed DSP speakers. And I agree that upgrading your 8000's to SE status (which I did) will make your system that much better.

One piece of advice -- I found the 218 is sensitive to vibration, so if you can physically isolate it, you will hear even greater improvement. I have mine in a cabinet, sitting on a Harmonic Resolution Systems platform and Nordost TC Sort Kones, and damped with an HRS Nimbus plate. Of all the footers I tried -- including HRS Nimbus couplers, Magico Qpods, Symposium Rollerblocks, Polycrystal cones, and Stillpoints Ultra SS and 6's -- the Sort Kone TC's were clearly the best (which is strange, because I didn't like them under number of other components, and only tried them under the 218 for kicks).

The 218, like the DSP8000's, will also benefit from good AC conditioning, but that's a whole other can of worms...

In the interests of fairness / balance, with something that's clearly off-topic, I've found that the 218 is completely insensitive to vibration & power supply.

No difference in sound through my system whether the 218 is exposed to vibration or alternative power sources.

Again, this is off-topic, so with respect to the OP, can we please get back to the (very interesting) original discussion...

Rolski, did you try a linear supply on the 218?

There would be a little surgery involved. It would be very simple unless the existing supply shares a board with other stuff but that doesn’t sound like a smart design from a noise perspective...
