First post, amateur, and further disclaimers.

I've got a 561 with Left/Right 5500, 2500 center, subwoofer, and 2 5000 in the back. All digital. Great sound, would keep it forever, except it died recently.

All displays on all speakers are coordinated with 561 (so the control channel seems to work and the processors in the speakers seem to work). Diags indicate good digital sources and analog sources on the inputs to the 561. The 561 seems to output something, but all I've got is an old analog techtronics scope so I can see what looks like a good digital data stream headed towards all the speakers on the SPDIF RCA jacks, and it seem to be present on the other side (speaker end) of these cables.

Tried resetting the 561 to factory with appropriate config for these speakers. Tried resetting a couple of the speakers including the master (which is the 2500 center). Tried running the audio sweep (to eliminate the inputs). Tried the setting to show input analog levels and watched them bounce around with the incoming audio. No sound.

The only change since the last time it worked was a few weeks away when there were a couple of power failures in the neighborhood.

Any ideas, or anyone I can work with near me in the states would be appreciated. I'd hate to give up on this system, sound is (was) excellent. Thanks in advance for any pointers.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

While, I’m no expert, and I’m not very familiar with the 2500 subwoofer, I’m not sure that the 2500 speaker can be used as the master speaker. Therefor you might try a set up with the L or R as the master and see if that helps.

I’d also comment that the D2500 is a subwoofer and not a centre speaker, so you’re missing a proper centre for your system_ I presume that you’re set up with a phantom centre.

I don’t know if your speakers are 18-bit or 24bit / 96kHz but you could probably upgrade your processor to something like a 586.2mm (as a minimum) relatively cheaply.

I’m sure Bruce or one of the US members will be along shortly to give some advice.

Thinking you mighta typo’d... Did you mean 568 rather than 566? Our new poster claims to be an amateur (although sounds anything but), so don’t wanna confuse him...

Thanks for the quick replies. You are right, the center is a 5000C. It is configured as the master. The sub is 2500. The system is configured 5.1 DDD, all the speakers are digital.

They all say 96/24 so I think that means 96Kbits and 24 bit resolution.

I'm reading here that you guys think I should try configuring one of the other speakers as master. Maybe configure the system without a center, and one of the 5500's as the master and see if I get a sound out of it?

So is the implication of this that if the master is messed up, the whole thing doesn't work? So one possible explanation is my 5000C center/master has failed, and that caused everything else to fail.

And I am a retired EE, but not an audio expert by any means...not even close. Really appreciate the advice! Will try this next if you think that's a possibility. Thanks

If your speakers are all tracking volume and turning on and off correctly then your master speaker and comms are working correctly. Take any source device with a digital output such as a CD player and connect it to each speaker to check for proper operation. If they all have sound, the problem is in the 561 source setup or a failed processor. It is unlikely that all your digital cables have gone bad all at once but check them for continuity

I’d ask Marc Koval from The Repair Shop. He’s here, or email marc.koval@gmail.com

Hi,

My comments were based on your original post, but if you’ve got a 5000C, then that’s all OK and I’d look at the advice from Bruce. If there is a problem with your processor, then I’d seriously consider using the ‘repair’ cost to upgrade the processor, rather than get a repair.

A 568.2mm would allow you to add a HD621 (HDMI switcher) giving you access to HD-audio codecs from Bluray discs.

Typo sorted ... yes, I did mean a 568.2mm

Bruce,

Great advice to try direct connection of a SPDIF source to the speakers. Somehow, in my head I assumed Meridian was some sort of proprietary SPDIF implementation so I never considered this as a way to isolate my problem.

So I connected the SPDIF audio from a DVD player directly, one at a time, to the 3 RCA connections to the 3 speaker groups: The left and right 5500, the 2 back 5000, and the 5000C center which is grouped with the digital subwoofer. All 3 speaker groups worked.

So the problem definitely is the 561. Now, is it is configuration or hardware? The type setting shows 5.1 DDD which from my read of the manual is correct. My techtronics analog scope shows a digital signal emanating from 561 on the SPDIF speaker connections, but whatever it is the speakers aren't listening to my 561. Any other ideas on config or common failure modes, I'm not adverse to opening the box. Seems like setting the type which I have tried is effectively a hard reset?

Also, if it's beyond repair, I liked the suggestion to consider an upgrade to one that knows about HDMI. Got some old RUNCO video stuff that's ripe for upgrade.

Thank you for this pointer!

Put everything in Standby, point remote at 561 and press 'Clear', does anything appear on 561 display, 'Controller' for example?

If not, check the fuse in a little drawer near the Power On button and check for damage.

Yes, says "auto" for maybe 1/2 second then "controller"

Also, to be clear, even though I get no audio from the 561 source, the 561 can/does change the volume and source displays on all the speakers.

Thanks Bruce for the help on the phone. Looks like my 561 is a hardware fail.

Now in the market for replacement. G68, 568.2mm... something that will work with my 24/96 5500's, 5000's, 2500, etc.

Thanks everyone on this site, great help!
