If I have a 596, a 562 and a pair of 24/96 DSP5000s can I do the following and what cables are required?

Take the digital output from the 596 directly to the DSP5000s, with the analogue out going to the 562 for use in tape duties. How do I wire the comms and set up each device eg non con or conn etc.

Hi Tarik

You can do that. Do you have any other sources going via the 562? If not, I'd recommend running the 596 analogue output directly to your tape recorder for best sound quality, and the 596 directly to the Master DSP with and M5 cable, DSP set as Controller.

If the 562 is definitely required (does it have the 517 board?) then set it as Controller. 5C cable between it and the 596, 5M cable from it to the Master DSP (D1 if the 562 is supplying sources) and take the direct 596 SPDIF into D2 on the master DSP. Just remember to set the DVD source on the master DSP as input D2, with everything else coming in on D1 from the 562.

Cheers

George

PS Worth noting that the original 562 digitised everything at 16 bit, then used the 517 DAC board (16 bit again) for analogue output. The v2 and v3 models offered full analogue pass through. Hence my comment about running the 596 analogue outputs directly to your tape recorder (or headphone amp, second zone, etc)

Thanks George.

If I have time, I may try it both ways to see if there is any difference.

What wire is needed to construct a 5C cable? I have the din plugs already. Looking at the wiki it seems to have two cores and is shielded so is different from the comms part of the 5M and S leads?

Hi,

A small diameter, say 3mm, microphone cable, it can be foil shielded with drain wire.

Regards I

I use a Canare microphone cable, but any 2-core should work. I recall some people using stereo cable.
