I am looking to buy a pair of used DSP5200s and would appreciate some advice on what the different variations are and how to tell them apart. My understanding is that some but not all models have the following features:

SpeakerLink
apodizing filter
upsampling
bass alignment

It is easy to tell if a speaker has SpeakerLink, but what about the other features?
Did all these become available in the same upgrade as SpeakerLink?
Do all models have the same sampling size/rate?
How do these variations compare to 5200 vs 5200.2?

(I am not considering the SE version.)

Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

Thanks for the suggestion to read the data sheets, Robert.

However, that only confuses me. There are v1.0 and v1.1 sheets in 2008/9 and v1.2 and v1.3 in 2005.

From what I can tell, SpeakerLink was introduced in Dec'08 but the apodizing filter wasn't added till Apr'09. If this is correct, is there any way to tell which SpeakerLink models have the apodizing filters?

Thanks
Yankee

All have...

- Apodizing filter
- Upsampling

SpeakerLink versions have:
- SpeakerLink (obviously)
- Enhanced Bass Alignment (EBA)

Hi,

There are basically 4hardware versions:

- DSP5200 (Legacy/Non-SpeakerLink)
- DSP5200SL (RJ45/SpeakerLink)
- DSP5200SL.2 (RJ45/SpeakerLink)
- DSP5200SE (Special Edition)

Thee other features are implemented in firmware, which is updatable.

- Legacy v1.40
- SpeakerLink .1 and .2 v2.63
- Special Edition v2.63

Check out the Firmware Release Notes link at a the bottom of this page for details.

Regards,
Carl

Oops. Forgot about the .2 ... Better tweeter and electronics but not as good as SE spec.

I’ll update my post.

Carl

Thanks, everyone for this info.

It's interesting that all 5200's have the apodizing filter because it is only mentioned in some of the datasheets. Could that be because they didn't invent/use the word initially, and later changed the marketing?

Can anyone comment on the improvement gained by connecting the 5200s via speakerlink over ordinary digital cable?

Many thanks
Yankee

New features can get added to Meridian kit by firmware updates.

Apodising came along after the 5200's were first introduced, as was EBA. Typically firmware updates can be retrospectively applied to bring old kit up to new spec.

So early datasheets and other literature, including Manuals will pre-date these introductions, where as the later literature might mention the features - we won't get into the accuracy and/or clarity of Meridian datasheets even when they are current laugh

Upsampling has been in since day one - as opposed to apodising upsampling which came much later.
SpeakerLink was a hardware introduction, along with some cosmetic/structural changes, only the former of which may have ever been documented outside Meridian.

Meridian's production line will build the latest hardware revision, so one batch may be slightly different from another. Different hardware revisions will likely only be known to Meridian by serial number, and the only time these things see the light of day is for such things as restrictions on hardware upgrades such as SE.
