I'm half thinking about selling my DSP3100s surrounds & replacing them with a pair (or two) of 5000s or 5500s, mainly for aesthetic reasons, but I'm not sure if it would be a sound decision (forgive the pun).

All of the 5000s & 5500s are pretty old now & even though all of my 5XXX DSPs have only ever given a 100% reliable service, I read on here that others aren't so lucky; a tweeter blows here, some capacitors there.

Would you still consider them to be a sane decision or is it the about time where something goes on pretty much all of them & spares / repair being hard to find, I could be storing up trouble, even if the price of admission is very modest these days?

Hi Not'arf
Over the years I have owned at least 8 pairs of DSP5000 and 3 DSP5000C, the only failure encountered was one segment of a MK1 display.
DSP5000 model was undoubtedly Meridian's best selling speaker of all time and probably the most reliable, this was no accident.
Two pairs left and still functioning perfectly, but you pay your money and take your chance, however I would suggest the odds are in your favour.

Perhaps George / Fiddler will add his huge experience here.

I would buy again if history is known and condition is 9 out of 10.

IMO 5500 are great for surround in a big room but not to my liking for 2 channel.

With respect to DSP5000s (and also M60s), preventative maintenance is the key.

The resistors on some 5000s will need to be changed and I would encourage everyone with a pair to check them. Better to catch them early before they fail or excessive board damage occurs due to heat.

The electrolytic capacitors on the amp section can also be changed to restore the sound quality. This would be equally applicable to any speaker of similar age within the range. I would imagine for example similar improvements for M60, M33, DSP33, DSP5500, DSP6000 and some of the early DSP5200s etc.

Neither is expensive/difficult to do.

If you feel the tweeters need replacing that becomes costly.

Thanks, both, for your thoughts. Much appreciated.

My 5500s just seem to go on & on and they get a lot of use, much of it fairly heavy, but I suppose there must come a time when something will throw the towel in.
