Hello all,

I'm at the point where I want to ditch my Logitech Squeezebox Touch and get a dedicated streamer where I don't have to leave my PC on all the time to listen to music. The 2 options I'm looking at is a Meridian MC200 which has an internal HDD and would pair nicely to my G68 or I was looking at the Cambridge CXN which will cost me less new vs a second hand MC200. I like the fact that you can stream internet radio on the CXN... I dont know if you can on the MC200 and from what I'm reading the Cambridge sounds awesome. I'm on their site and they are coming out with a version 2 in the new year.

My question is what would you go with. I plan on connecting via digital coax. Would I hear better sound from the CXN if the ad/da is being done by the G68 since its getting old or would you go with the MC200. The CXN doesn't have an internal HDD but you can connect one via its USB port on the back and I have plenty of hdd's laying around to facilitate that. Any suggestions, thoughts, concerns welcome.

Sincerely,
Steve

Hi Steve

Your Squeezebox allows you to run it as a server and attach a hard drive. (just in case this had passed you by)

Hi Tom,

I tried to connect a HDD to the squeeze but it didn't work. I don't know if it needs to be powered because the one that I had was USB powered.

You can stream internet radio very easily with the MC200.
Internet radio is part of the Sooloos software package.

You need Logitech Media Server running on a suitable device.

I run my SBT from a Netgear ReadyNAS without issue (which eliminates the need for a Mac/PC).

You can also install Logitech Media Server (LMS) on...

MacOS,
Windows Home Server (WHS),
Debian/Ubuntu Linux,
Linux RPM, or,
Perl.

Personally; you can get a really good deal on the HP Microserver Gen10 - then install WHS/LMS.

My Mac can go all the way to XI - Mac user since 1988.

There is a built in server on the touch which may be suitable (check the link). The requirement was to avoid an external pc\server.

The Meridian MC200 is such an easy plug, play and forget machine and Sooloos works just great. Always and reliable, no fuss. Go for the 1 TB version. By adding an additional end point starting from MS200, MS600 to ID41 you will upgrade the sound significantly.

Cheers!

Thanks Tom! I will get a powered HDD and give that a shot. You may have just saved me $1000 smile

Tom,

Do you know if the SBT will read NTFS drives or does it have to be FAT32.

According to the following link, these formats are supported:

FAT16
FAT32
NTFS
ext2/ext3

Squeezebox_Touch_-_USB_Compatibility

I have only used the server with an SD card when I needed to take a source to demo some speakers, which worked well.

Cheers

Hopefully 3rd time is the charm. My drive was formatted with exfat so I reformatted it to NTFS and copied some music. Going to plug it in. smile

It might also be worth considering a NAS drive and an MS200, around the same price with better upgrade options and you could run Roon off that too.

No Darling, I've had it months!
