Never bothered with Facebook, Twitter etc, never felt I have missed much....

Always learn from the mistakes of others. You can never live long enough to make them all yourself.

I use Facebook a lot for live music promotion at Little Rabbit Barn and keeping in touch with artists across the world. Something that was previously nigh impossible.
Most active musicians use social media this way to promote and build community among their supporters.
I imagine it all depends upon how you use it.
Also a lot of my customers have taken to posting fun pictures of how well they feed me. This has led to a competition between them that is having a positive effect on my waistline. My kinda community there lol

It is a very worrying phenomenon, so many people can't seem to get just because they say something on Facebook doesn't mean they haven't said it in the real world too. The problem is they say something and see 150 likes, but they don't realise there are also another 150 they know thinking "You smug/condescending/ignorant/nasty moron".
Now, what they have said may not be exactly what they truly believe either, much of it seems, to me anyway, that they simply get caught up with the current wave of gobshites that seem to be a little too vocal for their own good, but unfortunately seeing those comments you have to take them on face value and it is amazing how many people, who I have enjoyed spending time with over the years, who because of the views they post on places like facebook I no longer have any interest in socialising with or even being 'facebook friends' with.

However, for following events, artists and for running my business it is invaluable, so I stay on it, but very rarely post, as unless you are posting a picture of a puppy hugging a baby panda you are always going to offend someone.

Further to glzzE's point, whenever we'd be considering hiring people at the companies I worked for, we'd always check their social presence, and any number of times, we rejected candidates because they had posted things that were either dicey from an HR point of view, or just plain creepy/deeply offensive.

Yeah, a good customer of mine has a recruitment consultancy company and he said Facebook is making hiring easy in some ways, but in many ways a complete nightmare.

I have also thrown numerous C.V's in the bin because of a quick look on Facebook.

Just make sure you keep a robust deselection characteristic to hand for each, you wouldn't want to fall foul of unlawful discrimination law gIzzE... cry

To be fair, one look at their facebook profile would show it really wouldn't get that far.
