Hi

I was looking at some threads on the AC200 and legacy 5200 and VK suggested that the squeezebox SOX could carry put up-sampling. I am in a position where I would like to connect Roon and a Chromecast to my legacy 5200s. I understand that this can be done without a pre-amp / processor. I thought the AC200 would be the answer but it seems pretty basic in its function.

Is there a way of utilising the Roon software , (DSP settings)to customise the audio if it was plugged directly into the speaker. I am thinking long term of an MS200 or the new streamer. (Would a 218 be the best option?).

Cheers
Tom

Why not add a Raspberry Pi on it with a Digi+ Hatt?

Probably the cheapest and easiest way to do it.

I hadn't realized how cheap the Pro option was!

It is amazing value.

iFi PSU £45
Digi+ Pro £30
Rasberry Pi £30

You have an amazing sounding endpoint for such a good price.

Depending on the system you don't even need the iFi PSU, so you can be up and running for £60.

That was my initial thought, but I want to know is whether that combo allows me to utilise Roon DSP (and whether it is worth it)into M DSP speakers or whether I'd be better off with a processor or 218 in-between. The 218 does FIFO, upsampling, Treble: Bass: Axis:Phase:Balance configuration. One of the speakers will be a little boxed in too.

Cheers

I have the IQAudio Digi+ Hat plugged into my G68 and that allows full DSP.

Do you think it would sounds better if it was plugged directly into your speakers ?

I never tried it Tom, and I have now sold my 5200s and gone with Quad amps and Quad ribbon speakers.

I always did find that any digital source sounded better into DSPs direct, well that's not quite true, when I had a pair of 18 bit 5ks in the bedroom they actually sounded nicer with a 568 in between, but in general I have preferred direct input to DSPs.

I have also been running a Pi with an Explorer 2 plugged into it as well in the other room, again with a modded Quad 405-2 and a pair of Quad 988 Electrostatics which sounds absolutely divine. I preferred that combo to the MS600 which says a lot I reckon.

But we are changing that room around and the so the 988s have gone, to be fair they are seriously ugly speakers. So not sure what I will put in there.
Maybe a pair of 5ks, 3200s or some Harbeth 30.1 or Compact 7s if I stick with the Explorer and 405-2.

The parametric EQ was superb with the 988s though, got them sounded incredible.

Cheers Guy , those speakers are a bit unusual in their looks!

I'll start off with a Pi straight into the 5200s and give it a go. I will need to get a optical to coaxial converter for the Chromecast.
(Let me know if you want to go down the 3200s road.)

Cheers

Let me suggest the Allo DigiOne HAT for SPDIF output from the Raspberry Pi directly into your DSP speakers. I also own iFi power units, "purifiers" and the HiFiBerry Digi+ Pro HAT, so I can tell you that the Allo device is sonically outstanding, even with just a stock 5V 3A PSU.

More information is available on the Roon blog https://community.roonlabs.com/t/allo-digione-board/18564/301 and from multiple Hans Beekhuyzen reviews https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR4tuhqPppVp-PD0q17sPEA

Hi ODC

Thanks for the heads up. I have a couple of HiFiBerry Digi+ Pros which I use with F80 and an Odroid kicking around somewhere. It's good to know that there is another option that is as good if not better. I will get one. I will have to many end points soon! Have you compared the Allo to a Squeezebox touch (which was going to be my Roon end point)

Cheers
Tom

Is it possible to persuade legacy 5200s to accept a signal from another input 2 whilst in Mode 6, with the processor feeding input 1?

I've also found the sound more open when directly connected.
