I just bought The Flaming Lip's Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots album in MQA from Onkyo Music, and am comparing it to a dBpoweramp verified CD rip.

Listening to track 11 (Approaching Pavonis Mons . . .) now, and am blown away by the difference in versions.

The MQA is razor sharp, integrated and ravishing. The CD rip sounds like mud in comparison. Where did all the beauty go?

Back to the MQA, and it's there again.

Really startling

Thanks for sharing.

Try Supertramp for another interesting comparison.

I've just listened to the MQA version against my standard Sooloos rip of the CD.

The MQA is certainly more expansive with more detail and more controlled deep bass, the brass section is also better separated and more brassy. But is sounds to me like the MQA version is louder (volume was unchanged during the comparison, which I ran twice). The difference did not blow me away, as you put it, but it was certainly there.

Listening was Sooloos into an 818v3 then out to DSP33s so was missing the second unfold and not using the 818v3 DACs (as you presumably were). This may explain the qualitative differences in our experiences. Must try it with some analogue speakers.

For those unfamiliar with this album it is great, sort of quirky post prog with lovely tunes and sounds.
