Last CD player was my 500 transport, can't think when that was, but it was in our old sitting room which is now our bedroom and has been for the last 9 years, so been at least 10 years since I listened to a CD.

No Darling, I've had it months!

I've gone back to spinning CDs on the main system recently. I found I didn't enjoy sitting with a tablet to choose music, especially later in the evening when trying to reduce screen time, and the habit of burning through random tracks (because you can) works against spending time with, and getting enjoyment from, one album at a time.

In some ways it's perhaps akin to vinyl playing; much more of a purposeful act physically choosing and getting it going, and you are committing to sit and listen to that selection for it's duration. My musical enjoyment, and appreciation of the system has gone back up again.

I rather regret selling my 808.2i a couple of years ago, nothing else has sounded as good, including streaming into an ID40 in the 861v4 LPS (good as it is). I'm currently using a 598 as the source.

I realise that mine is a minority opinion, but I do feel that there's still a place for good quality CD transports. I should add that I regularly use Spotify around the rest of the house and in the car, which I enjoy so I'm not a 100% Luddite!

Cheers

George

+1

I find that I often only listen to parts of a track with streamed music. That said, depending on the track, that can be a good thing.

I also agree with George's comments above about the enjoyment that comes from picking out a CD & listening to it all the way through, knowing the start of the next track as the current one ends...

Having said all of that I think I'm about to go down the Tidal / Roon path simply for the limitless choice & instant access that they offer. A foot in both camps then!

Marcus, the question was about audio discs... I spin Blu-Rays, but not CDs.

Hi George,

I understand your point but I think it is a symptom of the whole iPhone/iPad obsession that I know I have and see absolutely that my kids and others have. We need help !!!

That said, the ability to put on a single album and play it from start to finish is not available only to those spinning discs. I get the ritualistic/physical-get-off-the-sofa part of that though.

Sunday evening just gone I sat with Mrs L and we listened to PF - Final Cut from start to finish at DSP70. It was an absolute treat....loved it !!! Of course I started it with the iPad and then put the device down so I could hold my glass of wine.

I don't spin CD's (or DVD's) now and haven't done so for quite a few years.

Rgds,
Nick

The ongoing discussion on video streaming has been split out to it’s own topic:

Do you still watch Blu Ray discs? (and other physical digital video media)

Carl

I’ll only buy a CD to rip if I can’t find what I’m looking for on Tidal. I still rent DVD by post off amazon, but they are discontinuing the service at the end of this month. BDs still get spun if I care about the quality of the soundtracks, otherwise everything sits on a NAS with the originals forgotten in boxes in the garage.
My wife will occasionally play cheesy LPs from the ‘70s that she picks up from charity shops on a plastic suitcase record player of a similar vintage and provenance.
