Am I right in saying that Deezer (High Quality) is half the price of Tidal at £9.99, or family (6 users) at £14.99? Anyone spotted if this will be the MQA pricing?

So I suspect pricing will be on a par with Tidal.

I believe this increase in competition is good news for users.

Does anyone know what constitutes "High Quality" sound quality on Deezer Premium+? I've had a look around their website and can't find any mention of bit rate. I'm assuming 320mp3 like Spotify Premium?

Thanks

Not sure.

I expect they are backed by 7Digital same as the others so much of the content is probably the same. Will have to snoop around the web to find out....

Deezer HiFi is CD 'FLAC' quality but the plan does not show on its website other than at: Deezer Offers HiFi and no pricing or whether it is the same as Premium+

Aa-ha
Found it Deezer Subscription Plans.

HiFi is normally £19.99/m but on offer at £14.99/m for 12 months.

Thanks Gents, and Ian, well spotted!

I wonder how soon Deezer will get up and running with MQA files? I didn't really take to TIDAL, as there were significant gaps in their catalogue for the music I enjoy, and much of what they had (of interest to me) was MP3. The Spotify catalogue (and tailored suggestions) is leagues ahead, so I'd be very interested in giving Deezer a spin.

Cheers

Don't know what Deezer is like compared to Tidal. Might have a look on a free trial if there is one.

I'm becoming more and more impressed by the need to be able to purchase and own MQA albums, though. Recently trying to find out about portable players, many of which don't support Tidal, and of those some can't handle offline Tidal media, and may not even use the full DAC with Tidal at all, led me to believe that Tidal is OK on a home system fully set up for it with e.g. Roon, but isn't enough for all uses, and not for mass market penetration when a very high percentage of people listen on portable devices of some kind.

Hey 3dit0r,

Indeed, any time we are disconnected from tidal or other streaming services we have no MQA except for a few boutique options like 2L. I asked MQA Ltd about this on the back of their CEDIA announcements, and they told me that the e-onkyo store in Japan will have MQA downloads for the Warner catalog. E-onkyo's website says it will be announcing/launching (?) something on 21/9. The downloads and purchases are restricted to within Japan, I'm wondering if I am there for a trip, does it mean in theory I can purchase and download from there.

That's interesting, thanks!

Yes it would be great to have more (or any) places to buy these albums in MQA. Streaming is fun but not the be-all and end-all. I would continue my Tidal subscription as it's been great for discovering new music and trying new albums, but then I'd like to buy the ones I listen to most and want to keep so I can use them on devices not connected to the internet, and if the web is ever down, etc.

yea the solution of the near future will be very different and will likely not pose the constraints we are working under now. Nonetheless, kind of like out of print albums, I'd like to purchase for download some of the MQA albums so I have an offline access to my most treasured tunes.

On a related note, the new M210 will ditch storage for improved streaming capacity, so when my MC200s die, I might be forced to finally make my NAS/Roon source work.

I assume it will be (barring a giant sunspot or Messrs Trump and Jong-Un getting itchy nuke fingers and giving us all a nice fat EMP). However, whether this will lead to more or less integration or confusion, who can say?

As an example, I recently explored getting a portable (dap) which was able to play MQA. At present, for any depth of catalogue, this essentially means it also has to stream from Tidal. All well and good if I'm a) in good fast signal (or any at all) b) have unlimited data plan, you'd think?

Maybe not - firstly, it seems that the Tidal app on these portable players a) can't deliver MQA yet, b) doesn't/can't use the high quality DACs just the built in processor ones. Further, it struggles to play offline Tidal files. Literally all those issues would vanish if Tidal compatibility wasn't involved and one was just playing MQA FLAC files off the memory cards.

The existence of multiple resolution versions of the same MQA albums (e.g. 96k and 192k) is a clear indication of labels preparing for download sales. Customers will be able to choose which copy they want and no doubt pay a tiered price for that choice. This is the same as you have today on HDT etc.

I queried this with MQA recently to ask why there were multiple copies.

So, it means download sales are coming for those that wish to do that rather than stream.

Streaming Deezer v owning music, shock - horror - vinyl making a comeback.

I've been comparing Deezer vs Tidal for sound quality using the "HiFi" settings and been presently surprised that Deezer consistently out-performs Tidal.

Although I initially preferred Tidal as I could combine my own music with the streaming service into one seamless library (as I had with Spotify) the SQ on Deezer and the breadth of music available has changed my listening habits. For most non-critical listening I'm satisfied with Deezer, the "Flow" playlists work well and I'm finding pretty much everything I search for.

Critical listening these days has gone back to vinyl now as I enjoy the process of playing LP's. and more & more albums are being released or re-mastered and re-issued on 180gm vinyl.

My family all use and prefer Deezer largely because they can download their music to play in the car and £14.99 a month for the family account is half of Tidal charge for their family account.

The looser in all this is Roon, unless it can integrate Deezer.

With an MQA file, I don't see how the streaming supplier can make any differance in sound quality.
It either 'is' or 'is not' MQA as Authenticated by the system. In this case the sound quality will be determined by ones sound system capabilities and also ones room environment.
If and when MQA become ubiquitous, streaming services may have to look for other points of differance to attract subscribers.

This is not to dispute people's opinions on CD streaming sound quality.
Personally I cannot fault Tidal on sound quality in my environment but I haven't tried the alternatives. With Roon integration I don't feel the need. It's as good as it gets for me with quality over convenience.
I don't listen on the move as that's my time for Talk Radio.

Thoughts, Chris

Actually, I'd say that the losers are the artists who'll be making nothing from that kind of loss-leading subscription.

I can identify with this sentiment, however when I tried this route last year I found it a real minefield in terms of getting hold of 'good' vinyl.

I had quite a few albums which I thought sounded sublime, but I had several pressings with faults which had to be returned (these were new reissues and otherwise of good sound quality).

Many of my favourite pieces of music were unavailable new, and I had to search for and order them second hand, which was, again, a bit of a minefield - I found some treasures but had to send some back. The worst case scenario was a couple of new pressings of Sinatra which sounded literally atrocious when I listened, so bad I researched into the recordings provenance only to find that the particular company concerned was notorious for pressing vinyl using CDs as a master. Worst of all worlds, IMO. Then for critical listening I would have had to invest in a good record cleaner, etc.

However, yes, with the right pressing on a good deck/phono stage - sublime.

For me, one of the greatest things about MQA is knowing the provenance of those hi-res files and I do find the step up in sound quality is on a par with good vinyl, although slightly different in flavour, to be sure.

In an ideal world I'd have both and an assistant to find me good pressings and do the legwork of sending back less than perfect ones 😉

Is it worse for the artists than Tidal? No idea what their royalties package is like.

Is it not healthy for Tidal to have a bit of competition?

Anyone know if Roon has any plans to integrate any of the other streaming platforms?

I'm sure our own Virus Killer has a pretty good idea; whether he's in a position to say might be another matter.
