The advice is great, but from my reading of the OP, I think that GMT may be being lead down a path he didn't intend to travel i.e. the room is to be lounge / media room, not a dedicated den.

Hence the coffee tables, wood-burner etc.

Hi

Thanks for all of the extra info and plots. This is quite a lot to take in! As Marcus mentions this is not going to be a dedicated listening room, despite my loose use of the term in my opening post!

I can see the benefits of the width option but, it does look very similar to the slightly cramped effect that I am trying to get away from.

The extra subs look like a good solution but unless they can be heavily disguised, I don't think it's going to work. I would need to conceal the cables too which would be difficult post build.

My current setup does sound good and pretty much as Chris describes, with the very occasional boom. Whilst I'm up for some room correction, I'm not sure that the full kit out is what I'm looking for.

Would bringing the speakers closer to the seating areas and losing the armchairs help? Still lots of reading to do.

Cheers
Tom

My neighbour popped over last night with the news that he is going to object to the planning so things may change come final outcome.

@Chris

I have downloaded the REW software and have put in the proposed room dimensions and made some tweaks - I have managed to get pretty close to your graphs.

I started to experiment with alternate room lengths with the current width and then after messing around for a while I realised that I didn't know what the ideal graph shape should be (idiot!). Would you mind putting up a graph that depicts a good room for ideal bass?

Cheers
Tom

The room , unless square or a cube, is not that relevant , you will ALWAYS get peaks and troughs in the bass , square or cubic makes it worse. The way to get rid of these is to move the listening chair to a position where you are in neither .. where the listening chair is , is about 5x more important than where the speakers are in terms of bass response at the listening position..
DO NOT aim for a flat freq response at listening position .. it sounds horible..it will be bass light and very bright.
Here is a full freq "ideal" curve ..aim for a lift in the bass with a slightly drooping treble. The graph is not cast in stone tho.

Tom; I didn't acknowledge your kind words. Much appreciated; it's good to know that someone else gets my humour, I was beginning to wonder if it was just me. smile

Lee, you had some kind words too:

Wow, I like your style Marcus. Hunter gatherer!

It is rewarding work but if I were to work out how much I'm paying myself on an hourly basis to fell & chop it, it would almost certainly be a very modest amount. Plus there's the ever-present danger of course, of which I had an alarming example yesterday...

Anyway, will your neighbour have put the kibosh on it all Tom? That would be very deflating for you all.

@ Marcus

The neighbour thing isn't settled yet but if we do get permission, I don't want to piss them off so we may end up with a compromised solution ... besides the fantastic feedback here about the room size and seating position whilst very useful, has had the effect of making me think a bit more about the implementation. It would be useful to have a comparison of other people's listening rooms and views on how they feel about their SQ when their graphs is not perfect - but that is one for another thread.

All

In the meantime, I have experimented with a shorter room which will be much more neighbour friendly. I have reduced the length to 6.75. Here is a simulation. I have tried to shape the graph to emulate Rodney's example as much as possible. Please let me know what you think.

Cheers
Tom

Here's my current room, I've smoothed the response to 1/3 octave to make it a little easier to see. Being a small room (3.3 x 2.6m) and being forced into having the MLP very close to the rear wall made it challenging to EQ and I have to accept some nulls. This is my front LR 5Ks crossed at 80hz combined with a sealed 15" sub with approx 3.6KW available to it.

I've gone quite hot on the low end, 10-15db but I like it that way. As Rodney says, flat is exactly that. Flat sounding. Ears need an upward tilt towards the low end.

I used to rent a house with 6x4m dimensions and it was a lovely room for listening. MLP 1.5m from the back wall and speakers 75cm from boundaries.

Here is a pic of one of the target curves I use , orange is target , green is expected actual curve.

I also have another curve with more bass and less treble... depends what's playing.
It's all subjective anyway, you set a target curve you like ... let the DSP handle the rest.
