I am considering having a Roon end point consisting of a Raspberry Pi, Explorer2 and my good old 8000P power amp. Is this a viable option or should I really have the Explorer go into a pre-amp first to prevent any overload/surging?
Thanks,
Andrew

I know you already have Explorer but how about a Prime as that has external volume control and alternate source so if things go bad, its easy to shut it down?

IIRC, the Explorer's volume can be controlled via RoonBridge running on the RPi.

That's what I was hoping, only using it for Roon.
Cheers,
Andrew

I have been using a rPi-Explorer 2-Quad 405 (modded for 1.5v input sensitivity*) - Quad 988 Electrostatics.

Really nice simple, and incredibly cheap set up.

Plus with DietPi you can add Airplay, Logitech etc. as well as Roon endpoint.

*Not sure what the input sensitivity is on the 8000p?

Cheers Guy,
I'm away from home for a couple of weeks, will check it out when I get back.

If it is very sensitive, like 0.5v input, then a couple of 10dB attenuators will do the trick, otherwise you are on full volume by about 33% gain.

I had on a Quad 909 amp for a bit which is 0.75v input and that was just about OK, so will work, just nice to have the volume at full to close at around 75% when using an app rather than a physical button.
