I have a pair of A500 speakers. These are the last/final version, with the removable grilles, not with the "socks" of grille cloth. Tweeters are some kind of soft dome. Took a look in Duncan's Meridian Info, but don't see the type/model/specs of these tweeters. I would have thought they used ferrofluid, and, since they are (by my estimation) ~17 years old, I would have expected the tweeters to be virtually silent or dead.

Yet they sound great, and are obviously tweeting fine.

Can anyone tell me exactly what tweeters these are, and whether they do use ferrofluid...and whether anyone is surprised they still seem to be at-spec after all these years?

Thanks in advance...

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and tweets like a Duck. It's a Duck. (I, like ducks.)

Not surprised they still sound great so keep on enjoying them.

Bump.

Does anyone here have any technical knowledge of this tweeter?

Trying to avoid needlessly de-installing them to see what they are...

Found this in the A500 User Manual

  • Tweeter 25mm
  • Coated diaphragm of fabric with silk
  • Linear resposne front plate
  • Low damping high stability ferrofluid
  • Damped cavity in pole piece
  • Replaceable voice coil

Haven't figured which manufacturer/model of 25mm tweeter is in the A500, though.

I found a Hitchhiker's thread Hitchiker's thread from 2006 on A500 which says the A500 tweeter is a Seas Millenium T25CF002.

Don't get excited yet though, as the SEAS Millenium T25CF002 spec sheet don't mention anything about ferrofluid, so they don't match the Meridian description above.

I'll continue digging.

Thanks Zygmunt -- yes, I saw that thread too. But it looks as if that SEAS was the D6000 tweet also mentioned in the thread. And the ferro-fluid mentioned in the A500 specs you also posted further muddies the waters.

I have the last version of the A500 -- maybe Meridian changed tweets?

I am having trouble reconciling near-silent D5K tweets (because of congealed ferro-fluid) that mandated immediate replacement (and that are about as old as my A500s) with the still apparently functioning tweets in my A500s.

You'd think this info would be somewhere in the interwebs...

Still trying to avoid needlessly pulling the A500 tweets just to see what they are.

Thanks for your input -- greatly appreciated.

I had a pair of the 1st version of the A500 a number of years ago. The tweeter in those was a Vifa D27TG-15-06 (Spec sheet).

Looking at the sheet the features seem to match those from your post so it is possible they are the same.

I can email you a photo of the speaker and the tweeter label if you pm your email address.

Does anyone know if there's an inherent difference between how fast ferro-fluid congeals into tar & results in a dead sounding (or virtually silent) tweeter...between metal-dome (as in D5K) and soft dome (as in A500)?

Wonder if that has something to do with what I've experienced from both models/types...
