Just plugged it all in as discussed. I have only front L and R speakers. Why won't the centre and rears work?

You'll need to give us some more to play with and provide details of how you have your system currently cabled.

Cheers
Tom

I have the 218 between G65 and FL and FR. Master G65 to 218 in. Outputs to FL FR.

But now G65 stopped sending communication to centre RR and LR and centre. The G65 should have no knowledge of the 218 being inserted so very random.

My front L is my master. Fed from 218. Did someone mention something about this a few hours ago? Something about needing to run comms cable?

Got my 218 late Monday afternoon, only got round to trying to hook it all up this morning.

Inserted the 218 between the 861 SL master Front output and the front left speaker - i.e. 861 Front master output -> 218 SL input, 218 SL output -> Front left speaker SL input.

Changed all the sources on the 218 setup program (e.g. Radio, TV etc) to use the SL input, except for SLS which I left as default (i.e. Sooloos).

Used my iPad Sooloos app to select Tidal favourite MQA albums from streaming via the 218 into my 7200SE's, displays correctly showed e.g. 192K MQA for Roberta Flack.

All worked perfectly UNTIL I tried to move away SLS to another source which would be handled in entirety by the 861. Bad News, I ONLY got front Left and Right speakers (as per the previous MQA running), rather than the appropriate Multi channel DSP outputs. The other speakers were clearly not aware that they were supposed to be back in action.

Tried loads of different things with no luck. Then it was suggested that I insert a BNC comms cable between my Left speaker (BNC output) to one of the non front speakers. Easiest option for me was to connect the Front left to my centre speaker. Everything now works perfectly.

It's clunky behind the scenes of course, but nobody sees that, the BNC cable can remain there for ever as far as I am concerned. Thank goodness for legacy connectors on M kit!Perhaps in due course there will be a firmware fix to solve this properly?

So Toony, although you were asking about incorporating a 218 in an all SL 5.1 system with a G65, the major difference between that and my system is just the 861 processor. You too will hopefully be able seamlessly switch between MQA and multichannel.

Ok. This is the issue. Where do i get one of these cables to run betweeen FL AND FC?

How can running a cable FL to FC make the rears turn on.

There is only 1 way communication to DSP5200 speakers over SL. The speakers cannot talk to the G65 so strange that this solution is possible. Do we need to run a BNC cable to every speaker?

Meridian clearly taking the piss with this. How can they not test something so basic before sending a product like this out. One of the main functions of the 218 is to integrate into a 5.1 system.

Hi,

Carefully follow the instructions posted by TartanB (as you posted elsewhere). The suggestion was to use a BNC to BNC (male) lead (available from MI' in the restaurant or probably from Amazon or eBay _ a video BNC to BNC lead would do just fine).

Can you confirm what Type your speakers are and which one is the master?

Also what cables are you using ..

I don't think Meridian have been pushing this for a 5.1 integration. There are lots of potential combinations of speakers comms and connectors with a Meridian 5.1 system.

I'm sure the board will get you working.

Cheers
Tom

I am fully Cat cabled. HD621 into G65. I have 5 DSP5200SE. My FL is the master. I have 218 between G55 and front speakers using cat cable. All is fine but rears and centre dont work when i switch to TVs DVD etc.

BNC comms from FL to FC is suggested solution but how does this work and switch on the rears?

Do you run individual cat 5 cables to each speaker i.e. 2 from 218 and 3 from processor .. if not please can you provide more details

Cheers

Just one BNC to BNC cable is required and you can run it to any speaker in your setup that has been left isolated - i.e. other the 2 fronts. I chose the centre because it was closest. My 861 has 4 independent SL cables to fronts, centre, rear and sides. I suspect however the comms side of things is effectively bidirectional. In the legacy setups of old you used to have one daisy chained set of serial comms cables passing on the comms commands to the next speaker in the chain (like turn up volume, switch to standby etc). I assume in SL world even although pairs of speakers are indepenantly SL wired from other pairs, these comms commands still find themselves being magic'ed across to all speakers.

I had one of these cheap red/black phono cables lying around that comes with TV's etc. I also had a couple of phono to BNC connectors, so made up my cable that way. You'll be able to source from any local electronics shop.

Only problem I had thereafter as I posted was that MQA to the fronts then got supplemted by unwanted signals to for example the centre. This was because I originally had Trifield as my preferred DSP setting for for Sooloos. As someone subsequently suggested the solution to that was simply to change my setup so that Sooloos on the 861 would deliver Stereo instead.

That's exactly correct. Plus one to the 218.
