Hi

I have been having issues with the Comms on my 218. I don't have an iPad nor a Sooloos or IR cable so I am left with SpeakerLink via a Reviver, controlled by an MSR as my only option.

Initially I had no success controlling the 218 via SpeakerLink. I adjusted cables (I have a combination on BNC and DIN comms.) without joy. I decided to change the default source on the 218 from Network to SpeakerLink and following a restart of the 218, bingo - I was able to control the 218 via the MSR.

I was able to press every source button on the MSR and carry on moving between sources as expected. I then went back to Aux (Roon/Network) and started to playing a track. Once the track started, I was unable to change sources again.

At this stage I would be jumping to a conclusion which is that the SpeakerLink comms only works when it is the default input, but then becomes disabled when the network takes the source. This is with limited troubleshooting though, as I haven't simplified my comms nor have I tried material from different sources e.g. DVD.

I will do more later, but would be useful to hear views and experiences.

Cheers
Tom

My thinking is that the 218 was intended to be controlled via IR or app/network.

I assumed that the SpeakerLink input is only to receive a SpeakerLink source and that once another source signal is in play, then there is no active Speakerlink connection to receive any comms. Just guessing though.

Did you actually play a signal through your other source connections before going back to network?

Hi
I haven't tried another source before going back to Network. The manuals states the following:
Quote:
The Meridian 218 can be controlled using the following options:

Via Meridian Comms from another product such as a DSP loudspeaker.
Via the Ethernet connection using the Sooloos system.
Via the Ethernet connection using the 218 Automation Interface.
Via Infra Red, using the optional G12 remote IR sensor and either the MSR, MSR+, or AC200 remote controls.

For details of the Automation Interface and the IR control codes
see the Meridian website:

Cheers

Well that clearly implies it should be working I guess. Although maybe the implication is that such control would come back via the SpeakerLink 'out' rather than 'in'' as that would always have a signal link e.g. Receiving IR via DSPs with a display.

I can't test it in my set up unfortunately.

That makes sense - Although I use the SpeakerLink out to send the audio to the 5200SEs which have BNC comms. Well worth a second check though.

It seems you've got comms back via SpeakerLink in then, so I guess it should be working anyway unless you had it ticked as controller, rather than the speakers.

I had it set to auto. I will set to "Not controller" and see if that helps.

Thanks

So it looks like I am not getting any audio through the SpeakerLink via Reviver signal. I need to go back to basics with my troubleshooting.

Just my luck that the delayed 218 delivery coincided with the weekend of a huge virus outbreak!

Cheers

I have started my troubleshooting. I have removed the reviver from the setup and am experimenting by connecting the DSP front speakers on the G68 to the digital coax in on the 218.

I changed the deafault source on the 218 to TV Digital in (Coax) and restarted. The TV played through the 218 as it should. I then started Roon on my phone and played a track on the 218. This caused the TV source to be replaced by Roon without selecting the source. Should it do this?

I am going to try and nick an iPad to see if can change it back to TV without restarting the 218.

Would be great if someone could select a non network source on their 218 and then play a track through Roon to see if it grabs the source input.

Cheers
Tom

I would have thought that behaviour would be normal. When on a different source on an 861, playing a track in Sooloos will switch the input to ID40 straight away.

Thanks that's good to know. Do you know if this behaviour is unique to the network connection input or would presenting a new signal from any other source cause it to then take over? e.g. pressing play on a Meridian CD player whilst listening to something else

Cheers

I have borrowed an iPad and installed the control app. This works as expected, but because I have no SpeakerLink (since I removed the Reviver), there is no comms return to the G68 which means the source change from the 218 but not the G68. I will add the Reviver back this evening and see what happens.

As it stands, it looks like the IR option may be the simplest and most cost effective solution for me. Does anybody know what is required to get the IR working? Is it just a receiver into the back of the 218 or do I need to connect it to the G68 in some way?

Cheers

This morning, I added the Reviver back into the system so that I could attempt to control the G68 via the 218 app. This did not work:

1) Changing sources on the app made no difference to the G68

2) Changing sources on the app did change the 218 source and this was reflected on the 5200SE display

3) Changing volume on the app did not change the volume on the 5200SE

4) Changing the volume via the MSR did change the 5200SE volume

I then turned off the G68

5) The volume change on the app still had no effect

6) The volume change on the MSR did not change the volume on the speaker

Should I be making one of the speakers a controller?

I will test this later and feedback.

Cheers
Tom

I'm not quite sure what sequence/order your signal and comms chain is here

At the moment I have a combination of Comms.
I will remove all legacy comms from my L & R speakers this evening and test them in a 218 5200SE set up only and then build from there.

Cheers

I tested the 218 with the 5200SE only without any further success. I didn't type the speakers though. Also my centre speaker is the master, which means there was no master speaker in 218 2 speaker setup.

More testing this evening.

Last night I typed my speakers to 2 channel and made the FL a master.

The app worked correctly and I was able to adjust the volume to it.

I then retyped my speakers to 6 and making sure the centre was now a slave and the FL was the master.

The centre is out of the loop and doesn't turn on.

If I change source with the MSR then it changes the source on the 218. If I change source on the 218, it doesn't change source on the G68.

If I change volume on the 218 then it does change the volume on the G68.

SpeakerLink appears to be bi-directional in some circumstances.

Does anyone know if SpeakerLink comms should make its way to BNC comms. i.e. if I have SpeakerLink Comms coming into a speaker should it route through the BNC out?

My next test will involve removing all legacy comms apart from one BNC between FL and centre.

Cheers
Tom

Hi,

I have a SL connection between my G65 (C/Sub output) and my DSP5200HCSE.

I then use the comms BNC output (on the centre speaker) to go through a BNC to DIN comms adapter to my (older) D1500 subwoofer.

All works fine.

Hi Brian

Thanks for that. Makes sense. I didn't want to spend hours swapping cables if it was never going to work!
