I bought my Vivid Audio G1's and a Devialet amp and sold off all my Meridian kit and a few cars to afford it. I was left with a set of DSP5000's for my TV speakers.

I sold my DSP5500's for about 1400 quid. Guy used them for 2 months and sold them on, the new owner hasn't unpacked them etc. and cheekily, I offered 650 quid for them (non 24/96) and he accepted.

I must just find a place in my house to set them up.

My workshop manager was looking for a hifi system for about 700 quid, he does not fancy the DSP5500's as they are too big, but my DSP5000's are perfect, so I am most likely going to sell the DSP5000's to him for 700 quid and stick the 5500's where the 5000's were.

For very little money, I get an upgrade and he gets a really really good "starter" system.

The 2nd hand prices of DSP speakers older legacy speakers is not high, they make amazing 2 channel systems for really cheap.

Completely agree, what you get for peanuts is unreal.

I pulled my old 18 bit 5Ks out the other day as I wanted to test a D1500 sub, and was gobsmacked at how good they sounded, so much so I set them up permanently up in the loft.

Now I have some 3100s to use with the sub so I have advertised them, but for anyone looking for a second room or their first jump into DSP speakers they are incredible value.

Welcome back, Rodney.

We missed you. Given your experiments with 6ks, what are your thoughts on sourcing Beryllium tweeters for them now we know that it's partly their response time that makes SE speakers better than legacy for MQA?

Sooloos, Roon, G series (with LPS upgrade), 800 series (with LPS upgrade), HD621, AC200, Prime and PS, DSPs old and new.

Purdeys, Moke, Leica, 'Blad. Only the best.

Well, the SEAS tweeters made a big difference, dunno about the BE stuff tho. The issue is with crossover with a BE tweeter, you might get better, you might not. At least you have some treble control.

As to the time thing, you can use a miniDSP openDRC or their Dirac series DDRC-22d.
They both will do freq and impulse response correction , Dirac lets you correct a freq range of your own selection, like 20Hz to 120Hz etc. and define a target curve of your choice.
It makes a huge difference. Open DRC is a mere $299 and the Dirac version is 899. But if you run off a computer, you can download a 15 day free trial of Dirac and try it yourself.

G1's are a different animal to DSP6000's but actually quite similar in terms of dynamics and playing clean at higher volumes.

BUT... I am now spending 3-4000 quid redoing my listening room, a new bass and sound absorbent ceiling removing boxed sections and bulkheads, false Gyproc and uthermo walls, 30 1ft x 1ft diffusers, 8 1.2m x 600 mid/bass absorbers, 6 bass traps and a whole lot more beside.

I should have done that with the Meridians, the room is the most important thing in a magnitude above stuff like SE, MQA and so on. The G1's have persuaded me to bite the bullet.

Hi Rodney

welcome back wink

I couldn't agree more that room is still THE most important thing to get right.

Given your interesting history of 'Frankenstein' setups with plenty of bass drivers, add-on electronics etc in the path, I expect you would be able to do more with less and maintain a cleaner signal path from source to speaker.

If your room behaves better you have to fix less with the electronics.
My experience with this was also that you get to hear so much more detail in the bass when the room is not messing it up.

Look forward to some pics when you get chance.

Rgds,
Nick

It's too cold up there for them!

It is old wattle and daub, made me realise I need to do some serious insulation work up there.
A new playroom awaits!! laugh

Some brands you always come back to one way or another.

Have to say i am a massive fan of the Devialet Audio products after working at Oxford Audio.

I wonder if Devialet will be able to have MQA with them being class A/D based.

With a Devialet... have you tried 'SAM' (sort of EBA)? Not sure if there is filter or whatever they call for the G1s, however, but I tried with some speakers and 'wow'.

Regards and wellcome back!

I am not that familiar with MQA , but if its software based , It should be a snap to include in a Devialet and Im sure if and when MQA becomes ubiquitous , they may do so.

What with Devialets new Phantom speaker (check it out , seems amazing) which they tout as 1000x better than what you got now and Meridian MQA that takes music to an unheard level , we should be in for a wild ride.

The Phantom is much in Meridians mould in that it is a self contained unit with wifi etc... otherwise , looks wise , its closer to the G1 oddness than meridians.. it seems Devialet are in some way doing a "Meridian" in respect of self contained units and multispeaker implementation with all the DSP trimmings.

16hz to 25k at 105db out of a basketball sized speaker/dyson vacuum cleaner that has a 3kw amp ...astounding ..

G1's havent been sammed and considering there are only 17 votes for them (they need a 100 votes to get sammed) its unlikely they will.
I have heard some other speakers Sammed and I am not that keen after hearing them.
The 2 Sammed speakers I have heard , albeit they were "small", The Kef LS50 and a vivid V1.5, kinda sounded like the bass was being clipped or limited in level at the expense of depth , IE the speakers went lower in freq , but bass thwacks seemed to be unnaturally curtailed. At low levels this isnt a huge issue , but once you start listening loudish , it seems to be.
The bass is slightly flabbier without SAM. I preferred it.

What is SAM? Something like EBA?

Sort of, it matches the amplifier to that particular set of speakers you have in your system to give the best results.
