All I know is that there are demonstrations of a computer (PC or Mac) being used as a media server and it connecting to a TV via Thunderbolt viewing a Bluray movie, plus they are also doing a data transfer between hard drives on the same chain.

No, I don't suspect they'll replace Speakerlink with Thunderbolt, but just adding Thunderbolt for source ala a computer. that's the direction things seem to be progressing at.

HDMI has had their problems due to several different versions.

I just see Thunderbolt as potentially eliminating HDMI. there are adapters to change Thunderbolt into HDMI, which some people might do.

I just think that Thunderbolt has a tremendous amount of potential to replace older connections.

I think it would be nice to just connect a Mac/PC that has Thunderbolt and not have to deal with HDMI, just because of the cheap connector.

Promise Technologies already has Thunderbolt RAID drives that people are using to store large amounts of audio and video and they aren't tremendously expensive.

New Price, Design For Meridian Speakers

(TWICE Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The company is also launching an upgraded Sooloos-controlling iPad app, which now performs all of the functions of the touchscreen that comes with the $7,500 Sooloos Control 15 music server but can be paired with Sooloos music servers priced down to $4,000.

In speakers, the company's new M6 two-way tower speaker is shaped like a cylinder that narrows at the top. Its dense, braced molded cabinet is covered in cloth in sharp contrast with more traditional Meridian cabinet designs, which feature flat surfaces, MDF cabinets and laquered finishes.

The new design also sports a smaller footprint than the company's other towers, coming in at about 1 meter high and 10 inches in diameter.

The two-way speaker, shipping in February, was developed to meet dealer demand for a lower priced tower, said CEO Peter Wellikoff. The company's other active DSP speakers range in price from a $6,000 bookshelf pair to a $65,000/pair tower.

The M6 is covered in cloth except for the bottom portion, which consists of a black metal-cast housing. The speaker combines a combination tweeter-midrange driver with a 6-inch downfiring ported woofer that delivers high power handling with deep bass extension, Wellikoff said.

With its lack of edges that would create diffraction distortion, the speaker delivers spectacular imaging, Wellikoff said.

The speaker incorporates all of Meridian's core DSP technologies as well as Speak-erLink connection technology. SpeakerLink delivers balanced 96kHz/24-bit digital audio and control signals over up to 300 feet over CAT-5e RJ-45-terminated cable from Meridian components to DSP speakers.

For its new Sooloos app for iPads, Meridian is going beyond the limited control and information display of its first app to ;emulate everything a Control 15 [touchscreen] can do; including display of high-resolution graphics as well as fast metadata display, Wellikoff said. The free app is due in January, A third new product is the $15,000 Reference preamp 818, shipping in February. It controls the company's Sooloos music servers.

Meridian's $8,000/pair M6 active DSP tower speaker combines a combination tweeter-midrange driver with a 6-inch downfiring woofer.

Cool, but not a Sooloos zone for the kitchen etc. So no cigar, methinks; and almost certainly no SPDIF input either, so yet again, the effective price of these speakers is significantly more than the non-trivial price of the speakers alone.

We are still six days before the official announcement promised on the M website. Not exactly a teaser any more, is it? Someone at HQ won't be happy.

Apologies if I do sound negative, but the release of DSP speaker products recently seems to have been following a scatter-gun approach with no common strategy whilst at the same time alienating existing users.

In case anyone missed it:

Fantastic to see the '18' moniker back, but I'm a little puzzled as to what this will add over the 808.3. It is cheaper than the 808.3 and 861v6 of course.

I don't believe you are negative, if no SPDIF is present, it stops me buying!

I'm sure lots of us understand your concerns on that front. My bugbear is that they have further reduced flexibility by going down to only one input. Two SLs would still be better than just one, even if not as flexible as the SL/SPDIF on most SL models until recently.

I'm curious about the 818. Analogue outputs? Or digital? Or both possible?

Presumably it will be a stereo-only device, a bit like an 808.3 minus the CD player; or to put it another way a reference level AC200 with LAN/ID40 connection to Sooloos.

Well, only a few days before the details are officially out...

818 I think is a 2ch digital pre-amp/top-of-the-line Sooloos zone (like an 808.3i/ID40 without CD). Might be interesting to compare it with existing ID40 implementations.

I don't think we expected the M80 replacement, did we? It was only a couple of months ago that Rick (Audio Images) was soliciting feature requests for an M80 replacement and M product development lead time is usually at least 12 months.

What we expected/wanted/needed was a small DSP wired and wireless Sooloos zone speaker. Chalk up another Meridian product management failure (IMO).
