Has anybody tried a Dune with 5.1 analogue out to a G68 for Hi-Def film audio?

Would you expect it to be better or worse than standard coax and compressed (Dolby Digital) audio?

Thanks
Tom

Gut feeling would be just go with an SPDIF coax DD/DTS. It's just cheap op-amps so G68 probably tons better.

Can't comment on the Dune, but I use a cambridge Audio BD650 with very good results. I certainly always use the analogue 5.1 from the decoded Hi Res soundtrack, rather than the lossy Bitstream via SPDIF.

I wonder if JVB digital could modify the Dune's for SPDIF output?

That would be an awesome solution IMO.

Yes, they can.

Thanks for the responses. Have any of you made a comparison between the two options?

John:
Are you referring to the following?
3G-SDI with 8ch embedded audio

Thanks

No, you'd still take the video via HDMI (or component outputs). JvB will tap into the digital audio streams and add a 3 (or possibly 4x SPDIF) audio output that goes stright to your processor's SmartLink input.

The 3G-SDI would need a video scaler that had the right input, and you'd still need to strip off the audio as well.

Other option would be to add a HD621 or one of the other HDMI solutions.

Sooloos, Roon, G series (with LPS upgrade), 800 series (with LPS upgrade), HD621, AC200, Prime and PS, DSPs old and new.

Purdeys, Moke, Leica, 'Blad. Only the best.

Thanks for the information. I should have know that SDI was video . Hi-Def Audio for films is a low priority for me. I'd rather put the money towards better speakers.... but if the Dune upgrade was significantly cheaper than the HD621, I might be tempted.

Cheers
Tom

No BD concerts or FLAC 5.1?

Inception 5.1 lossless soundtrack is truly magnificent from the 2:nd disc on BD. Gives both your spine and your system a thorough workout. cool

Great point. I thought my Touch handles 5.1 but it must be a lossy format. Do you use the Dune for audio streaming and if so what % of audio streaming?

Cheers

Dune for anything with more than two channels (some DVD-A etc). Touch for everything else.

When the new Dune firmware comes out there is some talk about a proper GUI for music. Will be interesting to see how they do it.

Now actually 100% Multichannel 5.1 flacs, lossless BDs, 2ch FLACs.

After putting a wireworld solid silver HDMI to the HD621 I find it much better than anything I had from my HTPC before and would give the Weiss minerva a match.

GUI needs serious help though. It's not as bad as the Oppo but for music it's just file directories for the FLACs. Movies is entirely different with the iPad addons and meta data apps (mymovies, zappiti, yadis).
Musicnizer is not really ready for primetime yet.
