I recently bought three DSP3100 and a G68D. Iím happy with it besides the fact that the Trifield DSP mode Ė primary reason why I bought three speakers instead of two - did not gave me the Goosebumps I expected after reading so many rave reviews about it. Itís sad to say but I actually prefer listening to music in Stereo mode, the soundstage is more airy and openÖ

Anyway, Trifield fiasco set aside, since I now have a surround sound processor, I might as well go for it. I had my apartment all wired up when I renovated it three years ago, and the cable are awaiting in my ceiling. So here is my question: which in-ceiling speakers would be recommended? How does the Meridian 200 Series compares to Triad, Speakercraft, B&W in ceiling speakers? Anything else comes in mind? They would have to be passive (so no DSP420), and preferably within a budget of $500 a pair, since:
- If we sell the apartment in a few years, Iíll leave them there
- Itís not a dedicated home theatre; it will be installed in our 15í x 32í long x 9-6Ē high living-room / dining-room / kitchen loft, so no critical listening to rear explosions
- Iím primarily listening to music

Thanks

Jerome

I can't advise you on ceiling speakers but if you have a G68, Trifield width does not work properly and this is why you might feel let down by the effect not being "spacious". There are lots of threads on here about this issue which is still not fixed by Meridian.

Thanks Malcolm, I see... and I thought I got a deal on the G68; but that's just because it's broken frown

And even apart from width, one ought to be sure to fully calibrate before judging Trifield: did you do that yet?

Well, I think I did. At least I followed the instruction on the G68 user manual and the M Configuration program.

I used the Radio Shack analogue Sound Level Meter, couldn't get quite 75db on all the three speakers but looks like I was at 72/73db.

Then I messed up with the MRC, did the measurement with the RS meter again, using 80db on the meter since I didn't reach the 75db reference. I even followed George MRC set up tips and tested a few decay times from 400ms to 200ms, before setteling for 300ms, using approximately 20 of the 60 filters.

I didn't went through the +3db trick yet though. Would that make a difference? And am I missing something else?

And I really like your custom speaker stands by the way!

They're Richard Krol's really. He designed and made them.

Rears also have an influence with Trifield as well.
Did you play with the centre depth paramater?

We are told a Fix for Trifield width is comming.
Good luck, Chris smile

Thanks Chris, I didn't know Trifield uses the rears as well. And I will check the center depth setup tonight.

Talking about speaker stands, there is something I must confess in my current setup, which might not be ideal to judge the Trifield DSP mode: my three DSP3100 lye horizontal on a low wall mounted media cabinetÖ ahem. I know itís not recommended on the user manual, but vertical, the speaker would be quite above my ears height when seated. Plus it looks better, I admit.

Iíve been working on decoupling the speakers, which is probably why the bass without subwoofer right now is not like thunder. But I remember something about setting up the axis when the speakers are vertical, which could be source of DSP confusion?

I'm not crazy about in-ceiling speakers, especially if they are firing down. You might want to take a look at these.

if you are in an apt in NYC then don't buy anything too powerful ... Trifield does use the surround speakers. I bought a new pair of P200ZQ Meridian ceiling speakers, I believe they are EOL'd. But nice if you find a pair for sale.

Another EOL'd brand I have used for ceiling speakers for movies and TV viewing is NHT. They have been great and there is a AV supplier with a good website : http://www.audiovideologic.com/nht.php that does mail order.

The IC2 and IC3 are what I am familiar with.

Since you are in NYC you should come to our demo at Meridian NYC HQ - March 10th ...
