I have auditioned some M33s over the weekend and they compare surprisingly well to my current Ruark/Krell front end.

However, for a similar price I could get a pair of D600s.

I know these speakers are much older, but how do they compare to the DSP5000? From the pictures I hae found, they look similar.

I want to use them with a 561 and 596, would they be compatible (due to the age).

I'm sure I've read somewhere in the past that the D600 requires a new chip installing to enable it to work with the 500 series, is that right?

Also, what features does it lack compared to the current DSP range (does it have boundary settings etc..?)?

Thanks
Chez

The D600's are really old!

They have analog x-overs with a digital front-end. They have analog connectors, so can be used as straight powered speakers with analog sources.

I've read that they cannot run in a digital theatre without an EPROM upgrade, which might not be available anymore.

They cannot do MHR of course.

They can't do 500-series COMMS, so you'd have to run in 200-series COMMS mode.

I don't recall seeing the boundary settings, but they do have the remainder of the traditional DSP settings.

The DACs are probably 18-bit or so. I think they sound good, and are very much Meridian-sounding... but probably not on the level of 24/96 DSP5000s.

Overall, I'd say they remain good but dated standalone speakers... but I'd probably not try to integrate them into a theatre.

They are decent enough speakers, especially if you can get them at a reasonable price (I got my D600's 2 years ago for $700). The pprevious writer is correct - they cannot be used as is in a 500 Comms mode. For my purposes, they work fine as I have an all analog theatre (all analog using a 565 7.1) and do not need the digital input.

I'll probably move them to my LR and use in 200 Comms mode with a 200 CD transport.

I seem to recall that the D600s used 1 bit (bitstream)DACs, as did the 203 DAC I used to have. This was before M got into the Delta-sigma habit. Someone will no doubt correct me if I am wrong.

There must be risks in buying complex active equipment that is this old. Other models from this period included small passive speakers based on the head units of the 600s big brothers - the ancestors of the DSP 6000. What were they called? D6000 perhaps? That would make sense...

The name 'Argent' is swimming back to mind...I think these were the DSP6000 head unit look-alikes.

Nice bit of irrelevant trivia for you there.

Yep the Argents. A pair went on eBay a few months ago. Piano-black D6k heads.

I have to say the D600's we have continue to perform fairly well despite years of abuse, being early production models bought 2nd-hand from a Meridian engineer. But now days digital sources play somewhat unreliably (sometimes the master speaker fails to play).

The cabinets are nicer wood than contemporary 5k's, and feel more solid.
